For those who are still having build errors: You're probably downloading the PyCrypto source from https://www.dlitz.net/software/pycrypto/ and running into an error whilst trying to run setup.py, which is because it requires Visual C++ 2008 to build. I'm using the latest devkitARM and downloaded the PyCrypto prebuilt package from here:
http://www.voidspace.org.uk/python/modules.shtml#pycrypto
Everything went smooth sailing after that.
@FONZD , the install process is extremely short (after all, you're only flashing about two MB of data in) and it went out after installing FIRM1 for me too.
To me it sounds like you're blackscreening because you don't have an arm9loaderhax.bin payload, which is necessary for the process to work. Are you sure you have one?

The problem haven't been resolved by using build, compiled by another member. I'm still stuck at Exploiting arm9...
How many tries did you do before it worked?

Big thanks, guys. Turned out that my build was working perfectly fine, It was just me running it without pasta mode.
In any case - big thanks to guy who sent me his build of arm9lh installer. Understanding that it's a problem in console configuration not in the build itself really helped a lot.

So is it worth trying to install this without a hardmod?
I don't have hardmod. But you do have your nand dump before you start. And I was ok with hardmoding my console if something goes wrong.
But still, whole process contains 4 steps that can potentially brick your console, so you should decide this by yourself.

No. No payloads aren't really out yet for the end-user. No LCD init, no rxTools, complicated setup, so it's a no. If you update your sysNAND, you'll still lose ARM9loaderhax with the current payloads. And you have a high brick rate.

In old3ds the risk is very very low and we have aureinand and cake working in old 3DS (and new).
