Was around to see the original rise up and was a fan of the gameplay style (I actually have a box of Dune II on the table next to me as I type this) but the C&C series never really clicked for em, and for that matter neither did Warcraft really.

Also remasters have been a mixed bag even more so than usual this last few years.

That said they are making most of the right noises and my options for such a game have been somewhat lacking (DOTA/MOBA stuff does little and less for me) so now might be the time. Waiting on reviews to come in though, and even then it will probably be a while before I make the jump.

*sigh*

I was going to ignore it. I really was. I still have my original CD's (as well as an actual manual and soundtrack), and openRA should get it running regardless.

But then reviews came in with arguments. It being crisp clean on modern machines. Containing remastered audio and videos. Heaps of quality of life improvements, yet none touching on the core gameplay of just sending units out. All the expansions (ahem...I, erm...have played most of them through illegal means thus far). Without the hassle that is origin, but running fine on steam (and as such, on linux through proton). Skirmish matches on the original C&C (or "tiberian dawn" if you want to go with the redub)? mod support???
(C&C was the game that introduced me to it. I can't even remember where I got the "more red missions" and "extra content" packs for C&C and red alert from...this was pre-internet era)

And let's be honest: a good deal of nowadays' remasters is at best a mere graphical overhaul from something two or even one generation ago. C&C is from 25 years ago. It was made for DOS for CRT screens, mice without scroll wheels and 56k modems. To get that AND red alert (which grew on me while playing a pirated copy) for 20 bucks? I...honestly can't pass on this.

But what really drew me over the line was the idea that if this project was successful, perhaps EA would abandon their normal "let's be dicks" policy and allow for a remaster of red alert 2. Which would DEFINATELY be an instant-buy for me (even if I have to grab tiberian dawn into the same package...I hated that game).

I never played the original so I'm looking forward to it.
I'm not a C&C fan, but this remaster sounds like a really nice way to jump into the series. I'm excited to try it.
Okay, I've got to ask: how do you like the game thus far?

I really gotta ask, because I have honestly no idea. Personally, I find the game to be awesome...but it's my nostalgia kicking in. I mean...this game was from a time that the un-edited video's were about as good as graphics could get on PC, and control-wise...well...try playing the original dune 2 for a comparison (click unit. click 'move'. click destination. click next unit. click 'attack'. click...and so on), so it pretty much invented that genre as well (together with warcraft 2, IIRC).

But today? The graphics and audio got an update, but pathfinding and unit formation have since improved so much that it shows its original age there (meaning: as soon as you move a bunch of units through small terrain, the units in the back will take a detour accross the globe rather than wait for five fucking seconds :P ). And the difficulty is pretty punishing at times as well ("what? you dare attack my harvester? Meet my armada of units that came from nowhere!!!"). So...I can't judge to what degree these things matter... :)

Generous game, honest redesign, source code on the internet, on the bottom good initiative.
However, it's more retro gaming than a remake.
