Hey everyone. I have been out of loop with Wii stuff for years now.

My boy has just started getting into gaming and I want to setup my Wii for him and childproof it so he cant accidentally do anything to it like accidentally delete things or use system settings. Is there any homebrew or tips anyone has?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place

Some ideas I can think of are:
1) Bootmii as boot2 with nand backup and keep this card separate, should also back this up while at it e.g. to your pc (at a minimum bootmii as ios with priiloader)
2) Priiloader with a few hacks setup e.g. block updates and autoboot to your homebrew/loader of choice.
3) Set the SD card to read only unless you absolutely cant.

No need to do that. There hasn't been an update since 4.3E back in 2009, although a few games force you to do a useless update that installs download shortcuts to thing like Today/Tomorrow, Mii Contest and Nintendo Channels and also wastes a block of system memory. (SMAS 25th Anniversary Edition's an example of such game)

Nice. Thanks for the advice guys. I will get a small hard drive sorted with a ton of games and get it all scraped with cover art etc so he can just pick and choose easy

While Nintendo won't push another update, they could. There's no reason not to block updates with Priiloader hacks.

As for childproofing the Wii, you can also add parental controls.

I am going to assume that your Wii is already softmodded and loading games through a USB loader and that you don't want your son to have access to the Homebrew channel or the settings in your loader. If that is the case then do you have PriiLoader installed? If you do, you can install the USB Loader GX forwarder channel (https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbloadergx/files/Releases/Forwarders dols/) into PriiLoader and set the options to automatically boot into USB Loader GX. That will prevent him from access anything on the system menu.

I know USB Loader GX has parental control options that lock certain things and you can enable that to prevent him access to what you don't want him to access. However, I've never used them so I can't help you on setting that part up. But I would recommend asking about those settings in the USB Loader GX thread (https://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx.149922/) and have Cyan or someone else more knowledgeable then me help you with that.

Why not buy other Wii for him ? It's very cheaper.

If someone accidently selects "Sys Menu Update", your going to get screwed and have your Wii brick, or just barley have it work. Again there's no reason why you should not block online updates, and block disc updates. I barley selected "Yes" to update my Wii in the disc channel and I literally almost flung it to not get the cursor on the "Yes" button :rofl2:.

Anyways what you can also do is hook his Wii up to an alternative Wifi Network so he can play online on games like Mario Kart. (It's not perfect though keep that in mind.) I would recommend setting your Wii up in the settings menu so he can't change internet settings, or accidently download the SysMenu Update through the Internet option.

One more thing is that becuase the Wiimmfii service is on a seperate host you won't be able to download anything from the Wii Shop. You can still buy but you can't install them threw your Wii, you would have to do it manually by installing the Channel WAD, had to learn that the surprising way and had to unpatch one of my IOS's becuase I followed some instructions incorrectly becuase RiiConnect was not working on my Wii.

Also you might want to set up a chart of what he could do, and can't do so that way if he does something he's not supposed to do then you can probably have a talk with him.

I think you are misinformed. Wiimmfi and Riiconnect are 2 different things. I haven't used Riiconnect so I don't know if using that would affect your Wii Shop. But using Wiimmfi doesn't affect the Wii Shop at all. All you do to connect to Wiimmfi is either patch your game or enable the setting in USB Loader GX to connect. It has no effect on anything else on your Wii.

RiiConnect connects your Wii to the Wiimmfii Server, while Wiimmfii focuses on providing the server services. (Online play.) RiiConnect does this to (Online functionallity.) but focuses on making some Utillity's online like the Wiimmfii, and RiiConnect EULA. Such as the News Channel.

I use both and they both work perfectly fine, the only issue I get is with the Wiishop.

I don't think RiiConnect connects to Wiimmfi at all. From what I understand it's using a different server. But I could be wrong. Maybe @PokeAcer can chime in about this seeing as he is one of the people working on RiiConnect.

I looked into it a little more after I posted my comment; and it seems that Wiimmfii, and RiiConnect are seperate. The only difference is RiiConnect allows you to connect through things like the News Channel (Which serves as Wii Connect 24's replacement.) Where as Wiimmfii serves for online play purely... It seems the Wii Shop Issue is just from connecting to Wii Connect (RiiConnect) Servers. Wiiconnect, and RiiConnect both seem to get confused which means it's impossible to download anything from the Wii Shop through Wiiconnect

However it seems possible to get Animal Crossing DLC (Idk how...) And they can apparently release more DLC.

No. Just no to this statement. The risk is almost non existent for an update. No more than when you install Priiloader to block the updates. You'd have to have a power outage at the perfect time.

Again there's no reason why you should not block online updates, and block disc updates.
Also not true. If you don't have the required IOS, then games won't run. Updates aren't necessarily bad.

Wow some great stuff here. My wii was softmodded a long time ago. I think I just need to update stuff and that auto forwarder for USB Loader GX is a good idea.
