Anyone on 20.1.1 that did not perform the SD card update?

Now that 20.1.5 is out, I'm wondering if you can receive the SD card update without updating system firmware to the latest. If you have a microSD card (non-express is fine) and are on 20.1.1, you can test this by:
  • Format microsd card as exfat
  • Connect to internet (do not perform system update/disable automatic system updates)
  • Go to Settings -> Data Management -> Manage Screenshots and Videos -> Import from a Nintendo Switch microSD Card
  • Insert microsd card
  • Install SD card update, which should also result in a reboot. This is not supposed to be a system firmware update.
  • Go to "Import from a Nintendo Switch microSD Card" again. It should no longer prompt an update, which means SD card update was installed.
  • Check if firmware is still 20.1.1.

Any testers?

I just tried this.. unfortunately I got pushed to 20.1.5.

That'll teach me for being lazy with getting the sd-card sorted

That's really unfortunate! Thanks for reporting. Just to confirm:

  • You were already on 20.1.1 before trying the sd card update?

  • This screen actually updated the system firmware to 20.1.5?:

Can confirm it puts you on 20.1.5. I was waiting for my SDcard to arrive from Amazon, got here today and what do you know there's a new update. Thought I could get around it like OP suggested, but no. Forced an update 1.5. Unlucky. I decided to do it anyway since I think you'll need the SD card update for it to be hackable.

I wish we could cancel a firmware update like on PS4, but we can't. Sucks about your Switch 2. :/

I'm hoping the eventual hack will still work, but we'll see. Definitely a bummer, and I'm wondering now if I should hold or sell.

Same thing happened to me last night/ early this morning before any posts about 20.1.5 were making the rounds. I can confirm that the MicroSD update pushed me to 20.1.5. I did not opt to update through the system update menu. Difference was I was on 19.X.X that it ships with. I was willing to go to 20.1.1 but if I would have know 20.1.5 was about to release I would not have done it.

Here is my post about what happened. I’m mad at myself. Hopefully it will work out in the future. https://gbatemp.net/threads/best-pr...-switch-2-exploitability.671473/post-10676549

What are the odds 20.1.5 would work with any eventual software hack? I suppose it's all guessing, but in the past systems with at least the first 3-4 firmware updates have been hackable.

True, my issue now is I have two consoles. #1 is on 20.1.1 with account linked with NSO plus digital content without the SD update and #2 on 20.1.5 that’s has only ever been turned on for the sole purpose of getting the SD Update and going back in the closet. I don’t know which to continue to use online and which to go back in the closet. What’s even worse is I just sold my 3rd console to a coworker yesterday as well. Guess I should have waited and no I didn’t scalp it to him. I sold it for the amount on the receipt.

Ok. I just checked and I'm actually somehow on 19.0.0 on my backup Switch 2? Bought at Nintendo in NYC.

Edit: Nvm, I'm silly. I thought they shipped with 20.1.0, but others have said they got them with 19.0.0 as well.

I'm on HorizonOS version 20.1.1, but idk if I had done the SD card update - I have already inserted my classic SD card to copy stuff from my Switch 1, but haven't inserted a SDe card to use with Switch 2 yet.

Easy to find out, if the SD card is FAT32 then you didn't do the update. If it's exFAT then you did.

I just updated dropping my 256gb sd card in.I think it's a good idea to update now before they drop another update. There won't be no exploits patched yet because they don't know how to product the exploit.
