This is the most active subforum of "Nintendo 3DS Discussions". Threads in here include (1) useful tutorials and overviews (many of which a lot of work was put in), (2) developers threads for CFW / tools development and releases and (3) user questions for flashcart / software use.

The latter (3) being in the majority, the more useful stuff (1&2) gets pushed down, and it does so fast. For a forum newcomer, it is practically impossible to get an overview of available tools and current development. A lot of (still relevant) quality tutorials are by now pushed so far down, no 'normal' forum visitor / member would ever find them without a Google / Forum search - and they'd need to know what they're actually searching for, so things are difficult. Great development projects don't get the attention they deserve for the same reason.

Additionally, there's also some overlap between this and the Homebrew section, meaning there's stuff that could legitimately belong into both subforums. The situation is especially bad, as this here is actually the place for 3DS development. There is no other place in the web where so many talented people come together to tinker with our 3DS consoles.

So, does anyone else think that we'd actually need more subforums here? I'm thinking about a "Developers" subforum, where only developers can open threads and a "Tutorials / Overviews" subforum where only quality tutorials and overview threads will be accepted. XDA, for example, handles it in a comparable way, they are very strict with their rules and their system just works.

Any thoughts?

Pretty much xD
Problem is, the majority of people tend to ignore those subforums...
Duh, sorry :/. Hope the mods can move some of the tutorial threads there. However, I still think that this forum is in dire need of a developers only subforum. There is just too much noise here with all the different types of threads in this subforum. I even think that would be a possible way to keep unwanted discussions out of the KARL3DS, OSKA and NTR threads and therefore give the developers more room to breathe.

problem is nobody reads existing threads or make search to find an answer.
Everybody create a new thread for the same thing, which is already asked and answered many times.

Yes, the FAQ section has always been there, and users post FAQs in the wrong section (they even post questions in the FAQ instead of flashcart section...)

More sections or subforums means more users posting in wrong section too.
Developers already have their own sections (if it's not a custom firmware, it goes to homebrew development).

I think we need an Anal subforum for all those that go seeking out threads that they are not interested in, call everyone an idiot for talking about the subjuct and end the post "Moderator please close this thread"

"subjuct", it's subject you idiot. This thread is pointless; Moderators please close this thread.

:P

Edit: I like the idea of a Developer sub forum dedicated to tools and CFW like you say. This is subforum primarily about flashcards and so it would be a good idea to split it.

Yeah, it's not that there needs to be more subforums, it's that people need to make new subjects in the appropriate ones. Also, use the sticky threads which are exactly for asking questions...

My thoughts are that we should simply ban who doesn't read the faq before asking.
Those threads piss me off so much for some reason

Google search engine has been very helpful....I'm not sure why its so damn hard for them to use it.

japanese cia updates? = found it on google
what is emunand?= found it on google
CFW 3DS? = found it on google
watch porn in 3d on 3ds console? = found it on google

"watch porn in 3d on 3ds console?" :D

Anyways, a complete newbie would first have to find out there is something like the CIA format and also, what it is good for. Then he would have to find out about either the Palantine CFW or about how to use the Gateway. For Gateway, by now I know about 4 different exploits, depending on what FW and what console you have. The Google search for "Gateway tutorial" (as a noob would do) only turns up a tutorial for the oldest of the four (which, by now, is nor more usable for many of us). Chaldron has written an excellent complete guide on using the Palantine CFW, but that turns up nowhere in the Google results. Just as an example.

But, don't get me wrong - there is already a Tutorials section in here (which should be used more) and I don't think that everything should be served to us on a silver platter. So, that's not my main complaint. My main complaint is that great software projects don't get the attention they deserve because they have to battle with newbie questions not to be buried. Everything gets buried fast here, and that is part of the problem why you longtimers have to answer the same questions over and over, getting more and more annoyed in the process.

TLDR: Too much noise here, developers should have their own developers only subforum

The random circulation and bumping of old threads usually exposes me to really cool and niche releases. I can't help but feel there's still a goldmine beneath all of these threads waiting to be discovered. GBAtemp forums is not just a forum, it's multi-faceted celestial experience that allows spiritual rebirth and assumption new identities and goals in life many times over. I was once reborn a pigeon deity and swore to swoop on anybody using a nintendo product outside of their home.

Lol, and you will mod the Anal forum yes? ;)

I don't think you will be able to do much, people will still find a way to ask questions/create new threads on topics already answered. Hell in one of the CFW posts people are asking info that is answered on the first post of the whole thread. As for the Devs, I am sure they rely on something a bit more closed than the GBATemp forums ;) We just have to trawl through it all or (gasp) use the search function.

Regardless we should praise the mods for all their work, it's a helluva job here.

No need, I can think of an unnamed mod or two that would be perfect. :)

In order to find anything cia related, and since everyone know's GW is the only way to install CIA's, that is basically found on the GW website on the right hand side of the patch. It lists all features.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
