A friend recommended ODDTAXI to me and it's probably the first anime I didn't find cringe enough to turn off in the first few minutes, so I'm thinking of giving the medium another chance.

There's a heck of a lot of genres to explore but I'm assuming you want to avoid slice of life, romance, that kind of thing.

A few off the top of my head, giving two or three episodes a watch per series tends to be a good indicator of whether you'd be into them:
  • Great Pretender (Complete, fun heist style show)
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (S1 Complete, kind of laid back adventure of an elf after the main story is over)
A few more fringe picks:
  • Takopi's Original Sin (Currently airing, might play well into your dislike of anime cringe if you give it a few episodes)
  • Lord of Mysteries (Currently airing, Chinese dub with a really unique lovecraftian/victorian setting, seen very little like it)
  • Bungo Stray Dogs (Complete I think? No currently airing seasons at least, the creator basically described it as "what if a bunch of famous writers were characters and had a supernatural power based on their writing"; maybe some of the anime cringe in there you might not be fond of but the larger setting and characters really are great)
Only a few there but hopefully one gels with you. If you give more specifics about the kind of things you enjoy, even in other mediums like games and films, I can probably give you something better to work with.

People said nice things about Psycho Pass, when it came out. Stuff like, "this could be live action, it's so good." I watched two seconds of it, and it still felt very anime to me. I'd need an aficionado to give a real review.

There's always Cowboy Bebop as the premiere gateway anime. From what I remember, it doesn't lean into the usual tropes of the medium while having plenty of fighting and shooting. Each episode is fairly standalone too.

I recall Full Metal Alchemist having plenty of "anime moments" on top of all the serious fighting. It's a larger commitment, since it has more than one season's worth of episodes.

You can always boot up the first episode of Yu Yu Hakusho. There's "anime stuff" in that first episode, but it has a nice message about life. The English voice acting and emphasis on the small town give it a more quaint atmosphere than the usual anime inclination to start traveling at the outset (to save the world).

TL;DR: I'm not the right person to post in this thread.

Alright I'll throw my hat into the ring with 3 suggestions i personally really like.

Evangelion, Starts as a Mecha show, ends as....well, i don't want spoil it but it's a mindfuck for sure! Definitely something you should go into only if you can handle dark themes, this isn't some epic tale of glory and victory, it's a story of a broken world, filled with broken people, who's only hope lies in broken children in mechsuits. I know some diehard fans have a really weird way of suggesting watch order when it regards the OVAs, but just watch it how you want to!

Then there's Jojo. Yeah, i know what you're thinking, "Great...another Jojo person who thinks yelling MUDA or ORA in public is funny."
Will be honest, i used to be that way, but i was a teenager back then. Anyhow, I think if you just stay out of the Fandom, the anime adaptions are pretty great, If you like wacky and action packed fights where everything is well, bizarre....You'll probably have a good time. Shoutout to the OST though, they cooked with it. I suggest starting with Part 1, and to not skip ANY parts (not even part 6 like some of that goddamn cringe fandom suggests...it's actually my favorite part!)

Last but not least, i've gone over some anime that are pretty mature in a thematic way, with dark themes and violence. What if we spin the table a bit? This one's gonna be VERY hit or miss, but it's a comfort anime for me and honestly, i think it's great.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunnygirl Senpai. It's a supernatural Romcom. Has a very mature sense of humor and isn't afraid to make some jokes that may make some people uncomfortable.

Why do i like it though? because in spite of all that, at the end of the day it has one of the most wholesome MC relationships i've ever witnessed in an anime. If you can handle the "sus moments" i think it's hilarious yet heartwarming :P

Anyhow, all of these are VERY aquired tastes, and it's honestly an anomaly to me as why i like them so much. but yeah, that's that.

(do check out land of the lustrous too, that's an absoute gem hah, no pun intended!)

I'm mostly not an anime guy but I've watched Jojo's bizarre adventure and it's one of the best tv shows I've seen, I'm also currently watching dandadan which is hilarious at times (dubbed, I can't speak for the sub), but it is very weeb-ish which might be a turn off for a lot of people.
I can't believe I almost forgot about Evangelion, it's incredible in every way and you should absolutely see it even if anime isn't your thing

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Death Note are always my top recommendations, besides being among my personal favorites the original FMA was personally what got me into anime and FMA:B is a big improvement over that. They're both completed, not too long, and easy to get into for a beginner.

Sword Art Online is definitely worth checking out but it's a bit longer (and still ongoing) so maybe not the one to start with.

I could make a long list of all my favorites but I don't know what kind of stuff you like and I don't want to overwhelm you.

I have no idea what you find cringy, but these are some of the more serious ones that have already been mentioned:

Fullmetal Alchemist: the story of 2 brothers that learn alchemy to revive their mother who died due to illness, but things go wrong. It does have a few silly moments, but it delves into some very dark topics, and the story overall is excellent. There are 2 versions of this anime, both great, but I'd watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood first, as it follows the manga's original story.

Cowboy Bebop: this one's about the everyday struggles of a team of bounty hunters, most episodes are unrelated to each other but there's an underlying story to the whole thing.

Evangelion: giant monsters start attacking the Earth, and a group of teenagers are chosen to fight them aboard giant robots. The story is extremely convoluted and depressing. Despite all the sci-fi and world ending stuff going on, most of the story actually revolves around the main characters and their interactions with each other.

Attack on Titan: humans are on the brink of extinction, they live inside a city with giant walls to protect themselves from titans that want to eat them. The story gets more complex from there, and eventually has one of the best plot twists I've ever seen.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
PlanetES
Cyberpunk:Edgerunners
Sword Art Online
NO GAME NO LIFE & No Game No Life:Zero
Cowboy Bebop
Steins;Gate
Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-
Madoka☆Magica
Psalms of Planets Eureka SeveN

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the elephant in the room:
Demon Slayer.
Great pacing, no "cringe" shit with old men hanging out with 12 year old big-boobed girls they wanna do filthy things with, just great fights imho.

That being said, Attack on Titan is fantastic as well of course.

Watch Attack on Titan
Just do it, believe me

I just looked this one up, 94 episodes is a big commitment. I am intrigued because this recommendation comes up often around here.

OP seems to imply he doesn't like the typical weeb fare so...

Baccano! - A bunch of criminals and mobsters are trying to get their hands on an important item. Lots of characters whose stories all weave together really well.

Fate/Zero - Every ten years, a holy war is fought by mages that summon great heroes of the past that fight to the death. The winner gets a wish fulfilled. A grizzled assassin tries to kill everyone to make sure he gets his wish.

Tokyo Revengers - A guy is killed when an assailant pushes him in front of a train. But instead of dying he gets the chance to go back to when he was 12 and fix his life, by becoming a teenage delinquent. Along the way, he finds out a lot of dark stuff was going on in the background of his past.

Clannad - just watch it.
