Android version of 'Disco Elysium' announced

Shortly after announcing their espionage RPG Project C4, ZA/UM Studio is back with an actual Disco Elysium-related announcement. However, it's not exactly a new game but the Android version of Disco Elysium with revised, touchscreen-based controls.

The Android version of Disco Elysium will be available in Summer 2025 as a free-to-play game. Pre-registration is now live on Google Play to be notified of its availability.

Wait, a free-to-play game?

How will that even work when there isn't anyway for any microtransactions to be inserted into it?

Probably add some kind of energy mechanic and a "pay or wait" system, which is a pretty standard way of doing that kind of thing.

It isn't free to play, I think Prans just slightly misread. It'll follow a fairly typical mobile game model where the game is free to download, giving you the first chapter or so as basically a demo. From there it's a one time purchase for the full game, with you continuing without losing progress.

The phrasing in the video description is "start your detective journey for free".

Cant tell if this is a good thing or not.
Well, there are claims that the current CEO and executives of ZA/UM enabled the CEO to take ownership of the Disco Elysium 1 property without the creators' permission. So that's not a good thing. (I want to be clear here that when I say "creators", I am referring specifically to two individuals and not ZA/UM's creative team at-large)

HOWEVER, there is also evidence that said creators' behavior was constructing an unpleasant, borderline toxic and ultimately exclusionary workplace and that, putting aside the fates of the Disco Elysium 1& 2 properties aside, their exit from ZA/UM is actually preferable for the rest of ZA/UM's creative team.

Assuming that the profits on this game *are* going back to ZA/UM and not the creators, and that the executives are putting that money toward paying their creatives (who actually put in the work to make the game), this would be a very good thing, as I'm pretty certain some creatives were undercompensated (or missing compensation entirely) for their contributions to the original project as a direct result of the creators' behavior.

Guess I'll finally run out of excuses to not play this...
Absolutely. I had already bought the game for PC and started playing it, but I thought it would be portable on a smartphone epic.
I just hope they get the font and readability right or give you some settings for it

Don't support ZA/UM though. They literally stole the IP from the original creators and pushed them out to where they no longer own it.

what is considered toxic behavior in video game development? i dunno i think toxic behavior is way overstated in alot of business and its just the way people whine nowadays.

it all depends on contracts how people were paid. if the creators werent smart enough or didnt have the resume to put together a profit oriented contract that paid them out on the success of the game then thats the creators fault for agreeing to bad contract or not having one in place in an industry that is pretty well documented out in the different business models of development that works have used over the years in the industry

Erm...I mean it works better than BioShock would've...still we're not in 2010 anymore. Are we?

Though considering how powerful phones are now, it makes a heckovalot more sense to be porting console games now then it did 15 years ago.
And with Bluetooth controllers and ARM based architecture for efficient power consumption ah I think I get Microsoft's vision. The future of gaming sure is interesting.

probably gonna be free for the first chapter, and the rest of the chapters be paid separately (i never played the game sooo idk how it's gonna work out)
