Good news today for those of you who have been waiting for news about whether Google would be opening up the ICS source and for those of you who thought it was gone for good. Android engineer Dan Morrill revealed new information in the Android Building Google group yesterday evening, saying that Google plans 'to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it's available on devices.

This isn't news. The standard police for main android is to release the code once, enough devices have it. Honeycone was nothing more than a stepping stone to get android to more devices. It was always going to be merged back into the main android releases, thus they had little reason to release it's code.

The reason Honeycomb isn't opensource is they didn't want developers porting it to smartphones (for which it wasn't designed) "and create[ing] a bad user experience"; at least, that's what Google says.
