Hello,
I recently watched a video on Youtube where a user was able to access the folders on their 3DS's SD Card and have full permissions to it without physically unscrewing the 3DS and physically inserting the Micro SD Card into their computer. Can I ask - how did they do it? What software is available (and most functional) to perform this? My 3DS's screws are becoming quite worn due to how often I open it to modify the contents of the SD Card. This would be much easier!

I have a N3DS with A9H and Luma3DS.

Thank you,

Since you have a New 3ds you have two options:
A)Using the official Micro SD Card management app (found on System Settings on New 3ds systems only)

B)Using an FTP homebrew on your 3ds and using an FTP client on your PC

EDIT: A bit off-topic, but the screws of my N3DSXL broke and came off the bottom plate because I had to unscrew and screw it back a lot of times xD

Thank you so much for the information! I had no idea there was an official way of doing this - I shall check it out. Is there specific software I'll need on the PC end to communicate wirelessly with the N3DSXL via this official means?

Nope, you only need to use the network detection on your PC (i.e.: on Windows you open up a file explorer window and go to Network -> [Name of your N3DS] -> SD Card]
EDIT: Keep in mind that the first time you open Micro SD Card management your N3DS will ask you to configure a name and a numeric password which you will have to put on your PC when you connect

"Micro SD card Management" is some kind of broken samba that only works with certain Windows versions. It consistently works for me with my super-shitty Chuwi Hi8 Windows 8 tablet which I never update. I've never gotten it to work in Mac/Linux....

That FTP server works pretty well, but can get very slow (transferring lots of small files) or choking on funny filenames (damn Pok-e-with-acute-accent-mon.)

In the end, I opted for a hardware solution:
cut a 2.5cm hole in the plastic on the bottom right over the card. I got a bunch of stickers and put on a new sticker whenever I have to pull the card. I have a spare bottom cover for when I sell the N3DS.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
