So I just got Gears for PC, and it came in 79 .0## files, how do I extract them? they are RAR archives and I can open them with winrar or 7zip but they can't go past the first 100MB, no matter which file I try to extract

I also got a .sfv file, and a couple of .par2 s, and have no clue what to do with them

Pirating is wrong.

Get par-n-rar
http://www.milow.net/public/projects/parnrar.html
and point it to the directory your files are in. Press go, (make sure you don't have too much going on as Par-N-Rar takes some resources) and wait. It'll get done sooner or later depending on the size of the archives, and considering this is Gears of War it's probably pretty big. The par2 files are there to fix the archives (that's probably why you can't extract it).

That kind of format (rar, sfv, par2) is usually used on usenet.

Everyone is making it so complicated. Just put them all in a folder and click the folder (don't open) and then click extract.

EDIT: Oh, you have par2 files? WTF are those?

He has par files. You can't just extract it. It's not really complicated. Just point par-n-rar to the folder, click go, wait a bit, and you're done.

From what I know (very little) par2 files are used to fix files you download from usenet. Because a lot of the times the files do not get to the server whole, the par2 files are used to create missing data.

Wait hold on...how do we know that the files are corrupt? Some releases are split with hjsplit. The only reason I mentioned it, is because I've had trouble in the past extracting files of that type with WinRAR. If you run the par2 file, and everything shows complete (as in, nothing to repair), then the files are fine.

Maybe try hjsplit? The worst that happens is it doesn't work.

Whatever...

You make an interesting point. He hasn't tried it yet, and if it does show up that everything's fine he can use hjsplit.
Or FFSJ, which in my experience has been amazingly fast compared to hjsplit. http://www.jaist.ac.jp/~hoangle/filesj/index.html

I've never heard of that one. Didn't know there was a faster alternative. Thanks for the mention!

Get a news reader that has par2 and rar extracting capabilities!

I use grabit. It's free and it will repair and extract everything for you right after it's done downloading.
Definitely the easiest method especially for a usenet "noob".

QuickPar is ok too it's very fast. It will repair the damaged blocks and then you can extract by right clicking the first rar file and going to "extract with winrar"
