Homebrew A9LH uses the NAND chip?

I know that probably this is a noob question but... A9LH can work without a NAND chip? I saw on 3DBrew that the NAND takes 2 seconds to initzialize and the GW A9LH flashes red screens at the moment of pushing the power button.

Why does it sound like you were going to take the nand chip off your system before asking this?
Its only curiosity. I have right here my console,with the entire NAND chip xD
(Yes,i had a broken unit. Now in the trash)
