METHOD 1 (try this 1st)
1. power on your 3ds
2. tap the square that has a wrench on it (this may require some scrolling scroll using the d pad)
3. direct your eyes to the top screen
4. on the bottom right hand corner you will see your FW version

1 launch gm9 with the method of your choice
2 open ctrnand 1:
3 goto title/000400db/00017302/content (for us systems havent checked for other regions but it should always be second from the bottom)
4 mount the .app file
5 enter romfs
6 open titleversion.txt in textveiwer
7 read the number that says

You could use your nose to tap the screen or ds stylus in you mouth so he was correct that you don't need a finger

Or use the eye to scroll...
anyways, OP you should mention that the natural habitat of the wrench square is on the menu and you may need to scroll right or left but it may also be found inside folders so you should enter those and scroll inside them too... also a screenshot would be nice and you should mention that the color doesnt matter (color of theme)

You must have been following an outdated version of the guide, the fan method is no longer recommended for this exact reason.
To fix it, start by unplugging the fan (this is extremely important, or the next part of the guide might cause a brick)
Once you have done that, proceed to rip the fan apart with your bare hands.
If you hit the power button by accident, no worries because you already unplugged the fan. You did remember to unplug it right?
You may use a screwdriver or a crowbar for leverage if you are too weak to rip the fan apart with your bare hands. Alternatively, git gud.
I do not suggest attempting to use a knife to cut the fan blades. If you are left with your dick still stuck in the fan blades but the fan blades detached from the rest of the fan, you can proceed to melt the fan blades with a blowtorch. If you do not have one, you can use a lighter, but it will take longer. Be careful to not get too close especially if using a blowtorch. I suggest holding the fan blades at an angle so you aren't holding the lighter or blowtorch directly underneath the sausage or adjacent boulders.
If all else fails, I am sorry but you may have to live like this for the rest of your life.
