help me please!!!!! I get that error on boot (A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart)!! I cant use the XP cd because I can use the recovery console but it never finishes scanning my screwed up drive!!!!!!

please help, solutions appreciated!

This happened to my laptop, in which the HD is apparently unreadable 60% of the time.

Try doing a /fixboot /fixmbr. I sounds like either the drive is dying, you have a bad northbridge, or something corrupted the bootloader (bad shutdown, etc). The chkdsk option takes a while to scan especially if you have a large hard drive. You could just leave it on for a couple of hours to make sure it's doing the job.
