I thought the infrared port was the black square next to the stylus. However when I suggested it, someone else said it was for a strap attachment. No idea how that would work though.

It says "port" too you know.
It means ds and dsi carts will work in the 3ds, but the implementation of it will likely be by shutting down the extra hardware.
The main reason for doing this is to make sure the game runs 1:1, not 5 times faster if the cpu is 5 times faster, etc.
