The player itself is nice and sophisticated, but the 3ds sound output sucks.

Compared to listening to a DS Lite with Moonshell, the 3ds sound is ridiculously low volume, and also the higher frequencies aren't as bright and crisp.

Listening to the very same mp3 on both, on 3DS the hi-hats sounds muffled and volume isn't good enough to listen at the street.

Also, Moonshell allows you to software-raise your volume beyond 100%, which is useful for low volume songs or to get an extra punch.

Have not and will not. Out of all the devices that will play music these days I think there is the least point to using the 3DS over any others unless you have no other option.
Why not?
No DRM?
Expandable by choice?
Cheaply expandable via SD cards?

I have at least 50gb of music and am a musician/sound engineer by study/trade. I know you can get like 64gb cards these days but i'm sure they're still very expensive and not worth investing that amount into a device that I did not purchase for that reason/is not as aesthetically pleasing for music playback. I'd rather play my futuristic gameboy than listen to music on it. I'm not quite sure why you'd bother mentioning DRM. I honestly had to google that to even figure out what it was but hey, i've never had any problems with that...

Change it to Stereo.

I just use it to store 8-bit music. I don't really use it because I have a phone, so...

It's still a nice offering over nothing though.

That helps with the clarity, but not with the volume level. It is low. Hopefully this gets fixed in an update.

Is that possible?

highly doubt it.

besides, why artificially "improve" the volume when all it does is cause more clipping?
for people that think it has volume too low just get some in ear headphones, i got a 20$ pair from walmart and the volume is awesome on my 3DS

Personally I use Apple headphones. The only time I think it's not loud enough is when I'm mowing the lawn.

I use it time to time. Just not really much, but then I really don't go out of my way to lesson to music. Like I wouldn't see my self buying a dedicated music device specially a Apple one.

But I guess I wouldn't mind in the future if they add music in game support.

Sometime I play that game & watch game in there.

I think the 3DS volume is good actually.

oh yeah...how do you organize stuff in the player : x? i have not been able to sort stuff in it with my normal tags or file name scheme.

You are missing a crucial point here.
Not all songs, if not most, are close enough to 0db mark to get clipping from some boost.
I can hear most of my stuff on 110% to 125%, sometimes even more, on moonshell volume without any clipping at all.
I have a Classic Music CD which is so quiet that i can use the full 150% on it. On 3DS it's so low that it's impossible to enjoy it.

Even some eletronic music livesets that i like, i sometimes intentionally boost them to clipping point for the extra bass punch so i can listen to it in the bus or noisy places.

And that is ALREADY with earphones. The speaker of the 3DS actually sounds louder than my DS Lite, but the output signal is weaker, much lower on earphones.

I have to software-boost volume of most of my MP3 to near maximum before copying them to my card, which can be a pain for 2 hours long dj livesets and such.

PS: Thanks for the tip on changing from surrond to stereo, made a world of difference!

They limit the volume in software so people don't go deaf.
It's a law putting responsibility on companies for idiots who can't work a volume slider.

Exactly.
They are probably not worried so much about law, but more so liability. Nintendo are squeamish like that.
