Hardware 3ds power button problem

a few minutes of google later....

it seems that this problem is really wide spread. it also seems that everyone who says they don't have the problem haven't left their 3ds turned off for a length of time (say 2-3 days).

i'm wondering if the big eshop updated did cause the issue and if everyone is having the issue but not everyone notices it because not everyone shuts off their 3ds for a long period of time.

it was said that the last firmware update had a fix to address the complaints but i'll go on record as saying it didn't fix anything with my 3ds.

here is a great blog post i just found that sums up how i am feeling.... lol

•HERE'S SOMETHING YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE HEARD ABOUT: There's something "wrong" with the 3DS Power Button. Problems seem to have popped up since the last firmware update. They fixed Ridge Racer, and broke the Power Button! If your system isn't 100% Charged, and you haven't played your system for a while... Press the Power Button Once, nothing happens. Twice, maybe something happens. Three times... "Oh! You want me to turn ON...!?" the 3DS says in your frenzied imagination. There's --NOTHING-- physically WRONG with the Power Button, it turns --OFF-- every. single. time. Getting the damned thing to turn ON, is often an issue. This, more than any other point mentioned here, ANNOYS THE FUCK OUT OF ME ! ! ! Nintendo is known for their robust hardware, but here's an issue they seemingly caused, are now ignoring and has no fix in sight at the moment! Like I said, if the system is 100% charged, it's almost never an issue, when it is even slightly drained, good luck with that! I know Nintendo hinted at ALWAYS putting the 3DS back on it's Charging Cradle after you are done using it... Is this issue something they anticipated and knew about? How could they release a system with flaws in it like this? Charging the stupid thing AT. ALL. TIMES. is impractical and a nuisance!

i hope they get this fixed in a new update. this problem has been really bugging me. i only use my 3ds on occasion so i have this issue all the time. snailface, i feel bad that i'm saying this but again i'm happy i'm not the only one with this new issue =P.

On mine, I press it once (not holding it, not spamming it, pressing it) and the blue ligh turns on.

But then it sits on the black screen for about 4-5 seconds.

how long do you leave it off between reboots? if i power cycle mine within a few hours it works just fine. if i leave it off for a day (or more) it takes multiple button presses to turn it on. apparently what i am describing is what most of the internet is experiencing.

Nope, sorry. I am usually only playing my 3DS once a week when I take the train to NY. Its turned off the rest of the time. I press the power button, blue light comes on, couple seconds later the 3DS screen comes up. I have a Cosmo Black 3DS, though I haven't really played many 3DS games on it. Just OoT, otherwise its just DS games mostly.

is it always fully charged before you turn it on? apparently if its fully charged there is no power-up problem.

Yes, actually it is. When I'm not playing it, or playing at home, the AC adapter is plugged into it at all times. I don't use the cradle at all. Also, how do people with the issue power down the 3ds? I hit the power button and then touch the button that comes up on the touch screen to power it down.

it powers down on the first button press, each and every time. its only the power-up that is the problem, and it only does it after sitting for a time without being fully charged (or freshly unplugged). this never happened to mine for the first few weeks of usage, and i used it all the time. this only started to happen after the eshop updated, at least thats when i started to notice it.

all of these things are pointing to a software issue and not a hardware issue.

I generally leave it in sleep modem but when it is off it's for a while.

Mine's a UK 3DS, as I said it's happened at least twice but both times I may not have pressed it very hard!
I may have the problem though, as both times it has been when I have half battery or less- I usually turn it on at 6am and it goes off at about 11pm and into the cradle- the couple of times I have failed to charge it is when it goes a bit wrong

This happens on mine all the time, except every time its a surprise. Sometimes 10+ seconds, sometimes I think maybe the 3DS is completely dead, sometimes in under 5...

I don't even own any 3DS games, but I use it to check facebook at least once a day in bed when I'm too lazy to turn on the PC.

Stupid thing. Wish I could get all of my money back.

Happens on mine, but I really don't notice it too much, though once, I had to plug it in before it would boot.

I don't know if this is related, but the wifi switch used to have an issue on my black 3ds. When I turned it on it would always immediately turn the wifi off. The workaround -- and a rather annoying one -- was sliding the switch up halfway.

Cool thing is, as of the last update, the problem has vanished.

This kinda has me thinking that Nintendo is having fits trying to debug the 3ds's BIOS. There's hope, as shown with my cured wifi problem, that they'll eventually figure out the power button problem too.

I have all the described problems as well, on a USA cosmo black. I play mine once a day (just got it), I don't own any 3DS games, just using my AK2i, but every once in awhile it takes 3 presses to turn on. I'm unsure about leaving it for long periods of time because I've played it daily since I got it, but now that I think about it, it probably is when the battery is low, or hasn't been charged in awhile.

I don't mind too much, since I got mine by exchanging my dsi on extended warranty, it cost me nothing out of pocket in the end. However, if I'd paid $250 cash for this thing I think I too would be pissed at all the un-thought-out glitches and defects in its design. 20 free games does help a bit...

Yeah, been noticing this since the update. Sometimes it powers up after one single tap of the power button, sometimes I need to tap it twice to turn on. Strange.

the new update seems to fix the problem. my system starts every time now.
anybody else?

I actually began having the problem the past few weeks (and yes, I'm up-to-date via SM3DL). It's more of an annoyance than a problem, as it still will power up after a few presses. It's rather random in that case, as it will sometimes power up with one press, while at other times (I'd say most likely after having been off for a while), it takes 2-3 presses.
