3DS ‘below’ Epic’s minimum specs

Says new handheld is not powerful enough to run games such as iPhone’s Epic Citadel.

Mark Rein, the boss of developer Epic Games, has stated that as far as he’s aware the 3DS is not powerful enough to port over any version of the studio’s Unreal Engine. This is particularly interesting as Epic’s first iPhone title, Epic Citadel, was released on iPhone last month, blowing away the specialist press with its amazing portable visuals in the process.

A feat, seemingly, that 3DS will not be able to match.

“It's below our minimum specifications, from what we can tell,” Rein told Joystiq.

“We don't have a 3DS, so there's no way for us to verify that but everything we've been led to believe is that it's below our min-spec. You couldn't do a game that looks like Epic Citadel on it, for example.

Hmmm what do you guys think?

Apple always choose high quality and powerful component second to none.

Nintendo uses cheap electronics to makes high profit.

Nuff said.

I'm not worried, Nintendo games have never been about cutting edge graphics and power.

The wii had nowhere near the power of the other consoles of that gen but look at games like mario galaxy, where not at any point did I feel as though the graphics were suffering.

Sure the iphone has a better processor, you can't use it for phone calls so it might as well be useful for something.

“We don't have a 3DS, so there's no way for us to verify that.." says it all. Epic fails now anyways since they stopped giving the PC any love.

I would like to see the iphone do 3d without glasses...

Epic is not that epic.

That's not the point. It looks like the 3DS won't support the Unreal Engine 3 and that's quite disappointing and certainly not a good start considering that a lot of the coming games will use the UE3.

Ofc it won't support unreal engine since unreal engine can't render the 3D no glasses effect....

TC you're nuts, you are providing with information and yet you reject to understand every single thing this Epic Fail has to say "We don't have a 3DS, so there's no way for us to verify that..."

It's still unconfirmed, how can you effing screw about a handheld or any console when you don't even have proof to back you up? Or bettermore, when you don't have the handheld/console to test your claims??? DDJM.... -_- zzzzzz

There's a thread about this already.

They were talking about Epic's Unreal engine, and whether the 3DS could run that engine smoothly. Which is a valid concern since the Unreal engine is a resource-hungry behemoth. As for the "less powerful than the iPhone", that was added by the blogs to stir up scandal, because everyone loves a good controversy, especially when there isn't one. By the way, games cause violence.

"From what we can tell [...] everything we've been led to believe is that it's below our min-spec" is a perfectly reasonable statement. All anyone's heard so far is the rumors that the 3DS has two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs, a 133MHz GPU, 64MBs of RAM. That and a few screenshots that look impressive compared to the DS or the PSP, but less impressive than Epic's Citadel. Based on that alone, and when pressed to pull an answer out of your ass in three seconds during an interview, all one can do is give a rough estimate, and the estimate here is that the specs are "likely below minimum," just to be on the safe side, because the press would treat any possibility of the contrary as a promise of several 3DS titles in the works.

And just for comparison, the iPhone has a 1GHz CPU, a dedicated GPU, and 512 MB of RAM, and a 960x640 screen compared to 3DS's 800x240. So yes, as far as we know, the iPhone is more powerful than the 3DS. But like hybridreality pointed out, it doesn't matter. It's what you do with it that counts.

Why is the iPhone more powerful than the 3DS? Everyone I know that has one uses it only for music and phone stuff :/
Just so they can slap a new name on it and sell a new slightly updated version each year?

On topic: Nintendo's developers are more committed to their games, they know they will sell on 3DS whereas the iPhones gamer fanbase is considerably lower, and even then most people only play doodle jump or arcade games like that. Why put all that power into a mobile phone/iPod when the majority of the customers don't even know what an FPS or RPG is... :/

'Epic' can make an incredibly detailed game, turn it into an MMORPG or some shiz, sell it on the apple market... But they won't sell as much as Cooking Mama 3DS, I guarantee you. That is why none of this even matters.
(Probably why they are selling themselves saying the iPhone 4 trumps 3DS, nothing else to hang on to.)

They can't programm and optimize their code nowadays anyway... Epic Citadel runs ca. @12fps so... Less crappy framerate games on 3ds is a ok in my book. Besides, there's plenty others who don't have a problem with these 'specs' that are still unconfirmed.

the iPhone IS more powefull then the 3DS, they are correct, but it's enough to get unreal engine ported to it, it just requires a lot of work, Epic is just being lazy (then again, it's just ABOUT enough, and I want to assume that the 3DS's processor is overclock-able like the PSP's)
also Crimson, stop bringing the sterotopic effect into play, it has NOTHING to do with hardware power, the virtualboy is proof it can be done on 16-bit based hardware as well

Who would want to play games on an iPhone insteed of a ds? finger all over the screen so you only se half of your gameplay....
