So I've decided It's a good time to buy myself a 3DS and maybe a Gateway in the near future. But there are still some things that bothers me and I'm curious about...

Yes I know that the console technically CAN update itself to a newer firmware in the background while the internet connection is on, but still, at every major update that there is, the console always ASK you if it can do the update, so... honestly: are there any daredevils that are using the Gateway3DS with the internet on? Playing Mario Kart with friends via online or wireless or something and not giving a f**k about a self-update? How high is the risk of self-background-updating in practice? Did someone ever had theire console updated without there knowledge?

I want to know the facts from people's experience not dry theories...

Myself - I don't have to worry about things like spot-pass updates (if I understand correctly - nintendo's software distributing stations or something like that?) - we have close to zero support of any kind from nintendo in Poland. I didn't even have a chance to get my shiny legendaries unless I would go to Germany or France, lol. But I don't want to risk when I get the Gateway.

And another question... I don't have a 3DS yet so I don't have a clue... If I street-pass someone with a higher FW then mine, will my console perform an update or something?

The 3DS always asks for permission before updating.

However, if you use the Gateway, after running the installer the 3DS will no longer nag for updates. The 3DS will download the updates in the background, but not install them.

Oh I see... Thanks for the clarification :) The Gateway's FAQ on their website said "Yes, but we advise not to use online features" so I thought you could connect but just everybody was afraid of the background updates.

Well, that's weird. But as long as it only downloads and don't install I guess it's kind of safe.
So I can use Gateway and still have access to things like eShop?

Eshop requires the latest firmware - as of now, 6.3. Gateway only works on 4.1~4.5. So no. You cannot use both gateway and eshop.

If you use the gateway, you can't buy new retail games (mostly in the future) either as they will update the 3DS to a firmware where the gateway no longer works.

    Simply said, pirate or not.

    You choose

Nintendo wont update your 3ds because they dont have any rights to do that.

With gateway you cant play online, newer games will require AP Patches, worst szenario NAND Save (means you cannot save your Game)..

By the way tried acnl too game boot but without nand savin crashes and error message pops out and only power reset works.
But yeah mldream team cannot patch to 1.1 because patch is only eshop title and same to mk7 too and cannot play online and monster hunter 4 jap cannot boot now. but gw promised work with these things and most games work fine.

Yeah, I know. I think I won't resist buying Pokemon Y and SSB anyway. But keeping a console on a exploitable firmware is a good thing too. Gateway this and Gateway that: I'm more looking forward to future homebrew stuff. I loved what the homebrew scene did with the Wii. Multimedia, FTP, Cheats, Emulators... The HBC and HBB are soo well made, I use them all the time. I just wish to have that possibility in the future on my 3DS. and AS FOR TODAY only the Gateway looks like the light at the end of the tunnel. We can see a new thing today, tomorrow or next week (or never), but still... what if the 4.1~4.5 remain the only FW that can be hacked? I don't want to lose that opportunity.

If you want it at all, get another console that you keep on 4.x and NEVER TAKE IT ONLINE AT ALL. There's no real 3DS homebrew yet, but it may very well be developed eventually as people fiddle with 4.x.

Yep, that's what I chose to do, myself. A little expensive, I admit, but still the best way to have your cake and eat it too.

Exactly, thats what I decided to do. It is expensive, but then you get the best of both worlds and don't have to worry about making compromises.

My 3DS just arrived. It has a 5.1.0 soft anyway :P so, no gateway for me I guess.
Buying two consoles is a pretty good idea but a quite expensive one. I think I rather spend that money on actual games. But thanks for the reply everyone.
I better go now and hunt down a cheap copy of Monster Hunter :yaynds:

Hello yep 2 consoles is expensive but then you can upgrade another one and one that run gw and no worry updates. Maybe future custom 4.5 is possible to downgrade to softmod and make backups 2 fw:s
