naw thats not how it works you must press both buttons at the same time to switch from 3ds mode to ds mode
I realized that after I posted.
I guess that shouldn't be much of a problem, I'm assuming OP's issue is that navigating the games with the buttons is a hassle.

Ok tried about 8 magnets I had here and none put it to sleep. I have the New 2DS XL, is under the Bbutton accurate?

Ok found a magnet that works. Quick question, I backed up all my save data off the microSD card in my Sky3DS, can I use them with the games once I setup CFW. Also do I use the same ROMs or do I have to redownload CIA versions?

To back up the save data you need to use JKSM, in a similar process to this https://gbatemp.net/threads/importing-gateway-saves-to-cia-games.425743/ but replace selecting the games with the Select menu with pressing the buttons on the Sky3DS.

The Sky3DS and its roms will still work with CFW, only have to do the above if you want to install the games and move your save data to them.

Quick question Quantumcat, currently the games are on my Sky3DS's microSD card, once I install CFW where do the games reside? Also what is the best game format I should use with CFW, .3ds or cia?

If you use cia you can install them and then don't need the Sky3DS. Cia games are installed to the SD card, 3ds games are used on your Sky3DS.
