I have a working ds, and I'm ok with buying a flashcart (assuming theyre still available) for the ds as long as it doesn't take hours to copy or share. I have a couple of friends that I share emulators/games with and it would be good to expand the library a bit with games that we're familiar with, even if it takes a while lol. Would buying a flashcart have any significant benefits (like carrying over save data)?
Flashcart is the only way to launch most nds roms currently. You can pick one up for $10 from nds-card.com (a site sponsor) and it works with the latest 3ds firmware. There are major benefits to using flashcart, including extremely high compatibility and games play at full speed, both of which Citra can not even compare to at this point.
So for $10 ($12 if you want tracking) you can get the R4i-SDHC Gold 2016 card, which can also be used to dump your games via a DS/L (even though it takes hours). Give me a bit and I'll try to find that rom dumper.
Here is a link to the exact flashcart I mentioned.

Just found it again. It requires you to set up a FTP server on your computer and editing a .ini file with your computer's IP address.

Cool! I've never actually used anything like this (on my own, anyway). How does the flashcart work? I should probably know before I buy it haha

All you do is download your kernel version from this site (for the card I showed you) and unzip it and place the files on a microSD card. Then you can just take any DS roms (.nds) and plop them onto the microSD card as well. After that you just stick the microSD into the flashcart, then insert the flashcart into a DS/3DS and boot it like a normal DS game. It will then load a list of your games where you can select them and boot them.
Also for dumping games, I found a guide that explains how to do it, which uses a different dumping program from what I used to use so it may be better. That can be found here, which will use the files downloaded from here
If you have any other questions send me a PM as people may get upset with this 1 to 1 convo going on in a thread.

In terms of playing ds games on an emulator, is there any way to get .nsd files other than downloading them off of other people? I don't trust those websites lol
DS roms don't have (PC) viruses, so you'll be safe.

Also if you want to dump DS roms on your 3DS you can give this fork of uncart by AuroraWright try: https://github.com/AuroraWright/uncart. The description reads: "3DS homebrew utility program to dump game cartridges to the SD card". And yes it can be trusted because AuroraWright has made things like SafeA9LHInstaller and worked on CFW's like AuReiNand and Luma. (Uncart needs A9LH, (or another Arm9 entrypoint, but idk how to boot those easily) btw, and if you can't compile it yourself I can compile it for you, just PM me beacuse idk if AuroraWrigt is planning on sharing this here later (maybe if it's more complete, if it isn't already complete?))

I keep seeing mention of this unused code, if it's really there then why doesnt someone make a fork with the code used instead of constantly mentioning it.. smh

Looks like the Ds Card Format. Not sure if it is complete but might be.
