I don't really trust most emulators, the ones i have right now I have copied from friends. Are there really any 3ds emulators out there or are they all fake?

Also, is there any way to dump/build ds (not 3ds) romfs in a way that DeSmuME will run? I've tried braindump but it doesn't seem to like ds cartridges.

The only legitimate 3ds emulator I know of is Citra, and it doesn't have a much compatibility AFAIK. As for dumping DS ROMs, I don't think that there's a solution for that as of yet for 3ds. I know you can dump DS saves with a certain program, but idk about a ROM dumper

would i need to convert the romfs file at all or would it just take it as is? also, are you able to run homebrew on an emulator?

I believe using the latest braindump with 3ds games is compatible with citra, and I have read that citra does indeed run homebrew

uh, another question... I downloaded a .zip from the citra website with a bunch of files in it (plus another file, the "latest nightly build") but there doesn't seem to be any application files? I've gotten all my emulators from other people, is there a step that I'm missing?

(attached a pic of the .zip folder)

Citra is legit and works, but don't be expecting to actually play any games at a playable speeds right now (any demo videos you find are sped up to match normal play speeds.)

You downloaded the source code, you need to download a built release

There is some way to dump ds carts (its unused code on something, its mentioned in a dsi research thread iirc). You cannot build a cia out of them though. Dumping ds saves requires twlsavetool (probably on the same thread if you manage to find that first).

The dsi research thread mentions a way to dunp nds files from a cart, but it requires you to recompile some source most likely

    why
I keep seeing mention of this unused code, if it's really there then why doesnt someone make a fork with the code used instead of constantly mentioning it.. smh

I'm going to be honest, at this point it isn't even worth trying to set up. It won't run at playable speeds. At this point it's more "hey look what I can do" rather than being an actual way you should play the games. I'd wait until it's developed a bit more before even attempting to use it.

If I had to guess, it's likely because there are a lack of people who would put the effort into making a fork to make the tool, and would have a use for it. Also, it's probably unstable or potentially dangerous to use.

I know its uncart, but why mention it all the goddamn time if its so utterly dangerous.. why is it there in the first place and not removed?

So that someone bored enough may come along and fix it where if it were dangerous, it may become less dangerous.

In terms of playing ds games on an emulator, is there any way to get .nsd files other than downloading them off of other people? I don't trust those websites lol

There is a way to where you launch a special .nds file via flashcart (probably only works on DSL/DS) and from there you can eject the flashcart, put in your cart you want to dump and then it dumps the cart over the network. Even for the file size of a NDS rom it is EXTREMELY slow and takes HOURS to do. In my experience (back when I used a flashcart and tested dumping a few times) you'd be better off going to a trusted rom site. I don't think I'm allowed to link to a site like that here, but there is a particular emulator paradise that I prefer to use and have never had any problems with.

Edit: If you still really only want to dump the game yourself, I may try to go find that software again. All I remember is pain and suffering trying to get it to start and to go through the entire dump without failing mid way, and then the horrid amount of time it takes to dump a 100MB file due to poor hardware and wireless network transfer. But I still highly recommend using that emulator paradise instead. I've used it for years and have yet to encounter anything malicious.

I have a working ds, and I'm ok with buying a flashcart (assuming theyre still available) for the ds as long as it doesn't take hours to copy or share. I have a couple of friends that I share emulators/games with and it would be good to expand the library a bit with games that we're familiar with, even if it takes a while lol. Would buying a flashcart have any significant benefits (like carrying over save data)?
