So, I've encountered an interesting accessory for switch called the flip grip. It lets your switch to be held vertically. For me it is perfect for emulating Ds and 3ds games on switch. However, I'm aware that there are no emulators for 3ds on Switch at the moment. So here comes my question, is the switch powerful enough to emulate the 3DS in the future?

In lakka like 10fps for me, unplayable. And it's the better option right now.
In the future I don't know.

The Switch already has a hard time with the N64 and Gamecube and you want to emulate 3DS games.
I'm not saying it's impossible, though, but you should be a little wary of what it is able to do.

there's a projet to make linux more powerfull and compatible with switch? it can really improve a lot the emulation, a lot of them are open source or have an open source project that make possible recompile it to the same archteture of switch

Vulkan integrated to linux on switch (not released iirc) but there is no 3ds emulator uses vulkan ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really doesn't seem likely honestly. DS emulation should be comfortably full-speed once the emulators are mature enough, but I wouldn't hold your breath for 3DS.

3DS is not that far from Gamecube in terms of power, though there are more features to support that makes emu dev a pain.

When citra gets released for android it probably could run on the switch if someone ports it.

Note: that’s with an interpreter and software renderer

You all are forgetting that a lot of the instructions can just be converted from the ARM 7 and 9 into the ARM that is on the Switch, so it wouldn't be fully emulating the 3DS hardware per-se so it might be doable with some tricks.

Hmm. Looks like my earlier statement was not clear enough. What I mean is that in terms of hardware, can the switch emulate the 3DS in the future? Disregarding the complex software for now...

If Nintendo wanted to invest the money for instance, I'm pretty sure they could get it working. I just wouldn't bet on homebrew getting there.

You are forgetting that it's NOT possible. If it were possible, Citra would be running full speed on android devices already, and it is not, and it never will.

Why cant people like you who make questions for the internet to see just make the tools yourself so we can enjoy it? Just buy a 3DS. They're cheap and alot less frustration

I don't know why you seemed annoyed at my question. I'm not a technical person when it comes to hardware that's why I am asking. "Just make it yourself" is definitely out of the window. lol. I posted this to know if I can use the Switch to play 3DS in the future, saving me some bucks instead of buying a 3DS.

Maybe next time ask when will a PS4/XBOX ONE emulator for the Switch will be coming out. That would be a nice thing to have. Forgetting N64 and GCN are a thing. Both running at full speeds for every game is a step 1 before anything else. GBATEMP is already filled with questions that have to do something with "when is the Wii, PS1, PSP, PS VITA, and sorts of shit coming out for Switch homebrew?". I get it that you are free to post what you want but we dont need more duplicates swimming around the site

but 3DS is way less powerful than N64 and gamecube right?

3DS also have similar architecture with Switch. They are both ARM. although i suspect the ARM in 3DS is too different with Switch ARM, thus translation maybe too hard/expensive to do, needing emulation.

anyway, Citra 3DS only runs at 50% speed on my ~7watt TDPdown windows tablet (intel i5 4210Y)

Actually fullspeed 3DS emulation is way more doable than GameCube
    Citra + fullclocks + sw rendering + interpreter = 15 fps
Dolphin + fullclocks + hw rendering + dynarec + speedhacks = ass speeds

its the internet. When there;s a demand, skilled people who have free time may dabble on it and make AWESOME STUFF for you for FREE.

many internet corporation also thinks that demand as a market and build their business on it. Then release their stuff for free or as SaaS.

anyway, buying 3DS wont make Switch plays 3DS games. and wont bring the same benefit of playing 3DS on switch.

In most aspects it’s somewhere in between N64 and Gamecube

It might be similar-ish to aarch32 mode (I know aarch32 mode allows for full armv7 backwards compatibility, but the 3ds’ main CPU is armv6 iirc, dunno how different that is), dunno. But there’s more shit to deal with than just the CPU
