Hi folks,

I'm wondering if there's interest in a Dragon Quest VIII save editor? I'm considering making one, but just want to know if it's of any use to anyone and what features people might want.

EDIT:

The save editor is now available.
Features:
- Modify device ID
- Edit all 3 save slots
- Play time
- Gold, casino tokens
- Select alchemy pot
- Modify location (all slots) / coordinates (I think this only works on the quicksave slot)
- Bag contents (includes complete inventory list inc. DLC items)
- Modify hero name
- Activate/deactivate characters
- Character level, experience, HP, MP, strength, agility, resilience, wisdom, skill points

Version history:
1.0.0:
- First release

1.1.0:
- Added ability to modify play time

1.1.1:
- Bug fix: Overflow check for extreme coordinate values
- Bug fix: When loading hacked saves, unsupported item IDs now display the correct ID in the bag item description
- Bug fix: When loading hacked saves, item quantities above 999 will now be automatically set to 999

Hey this is super timely. I just picked the game up for the first time and I’m bummed I can’t get the DLC items. Would love an editor so I could add them in via a fresh save.

Someone created a save file with all the DLC items

Can just import it in using a save manager
Thanks! I saw that- they were concerned that the method of adding the items may mess up some hooks in the game (I.e.by having items too early). Did anyone ever confirm? I’d be bummed to get into the game and not be able to complete it.

I wanted to ask but didn’t want to bring a super old thread to the top

Figured it out, got it to work with Citra and a real 3DS. Just writing out all the item descriptions / IDs now for the inventory editor, which is taking a while.

Hi there, I'm also super interested in a way to put the dlc items in my savefile easily, hoping to see your progress and thanks a lot for your work.
Ah thank you.

Sorry for the late update (life and stuff).

Anyway, I've just turned my attention back to this little project and finished composing the entire list of items (man it took forever).

Luckily for you mgpachec, it includes flags for DLC exclusive items. Other flags include item equipable (per character), item category, item subtype (if applicable), item stats (if applicable), and PS2/3DS version exclusive items. In-game names and descriptions are also included.

Something else worth mentioning: I've figured out how to modify the device ID, so you'll be able to transfer your saves across devices.

Glad to know someone is working on this. I just went through hell trying to get my save data from citra to import to a 3ds system just to get the so called "DLC" items. Even had to try out 4 different systems that was banned just to get a message about "Server problems." If save editor remains the "plan B" for this kind of situation, then I welcome this. Thank you for your efforts.

Maybe next time they don't do something so dumb like this and just release a game update or put the dlc in the eshop with a FREE price tag on it. It's the same type of nonsense they did with dragon quest IX on the old DS back in 2009. Least those game has fan servers that preserves that part of the content. (Though for the way it enhanced that game, it wasn't that useful)

Again, apologies for the late reply, been busy.
Just released version 1.0.0 (see the opening post).
Beware that certain things can crash the game (for example, deactivating all the characters).
I haven't tested it extensively so please let me know if you find any problems.
I may add additional features in the future, but I might need some help (for example, creating a list of all the location ID's so that they can be quickly selected, but this will require actually playing through the game and noting down all of the values).
Obviously there are many other things which can be modified, but it all depends what people want.
Anyway, let me know what you think :)

Not sure if this counts as a problem but... :ninja:

I assure you, there's no virus in it. I downloaded the file again and did a binary comparison with the one I compiled on my computer and they're an exact match, so I can guarantee it's a false positive. I've also virus scanned it and found nothing.

I understand your concern though. What can I do to help? Perhaps share what virus scanner you used and/or the report?

You could even download ILSpy and decompile it - it will give you the original source code so you can compile it yourself :)

DQ83DSSaveEditor.exe checksums:

MD-5: 45FB2B8E665F1F7F92A8632AEEFF3812

Here is the report from VirusTotal.com for the file.

EDIT: So as you can see, it gets a pass on almost everything, and I've just been googling that reported "malware" and it's a pretty common false positive. (Of course, please feel free to confirm this yourself.) Is that what you detected?

Hey there, guy who made the save file here. I played through the whole game start to finish with that file without any issues! Should be totally safe. Although I am glad to see a proper save editor being created!

Unfortunately, short of getting the file digitally signed, I don't know what I can do to fix this "virus" situation. I'm pretty sure it's detecting it as a virus because the program isn't digitally signed and it naturally has the ability/code which allows the opening and modification of a file on your computer. The best advice I can give, if you're concerned about it, is to decompile it and look at what it does yourself. You'll see it's nothing malicious. It only opens and saves the file you choose, and does absolutely nothing else to your system.

For those of you willing to try it out, I hope it's of some use to you. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Since it's unlikely the editor will be used, here's all you need to know to modify the inventory manually.

Device ID offset: 205,892
Slot size: 68,624
Inventory offset: 2,788

The file you're looking for is called honeySave.bin. You'll need a HEX editor, there are several free ones out there.

The save file is organised into 4 blocks. The first three are save slots, 68,624 bytes worth of data each. So if you want to modify the bag contents in the quicksave slot (Slot 3) for example, you'll need to go to offset (68,624 * 2) + 2,788 = 140,036. Once there, you'll have a list of item ID and item quantity pairs. Each value is 16-bits (2 bytes) in size. So a single slot in the bag takes up 4 bytes, the first two for the item ID, and the second two for the item quantity. There are enough slots to fit every item.

The Device ID is 4 bytes long. You'll need to change it if you're moving save files from one 3DS to another, or to the PC.

The save has no error checking believe it or not - so no need to worry about checksums or anything.

Here is a list of all the items IDs:

Hey, I just thought you should know. Since Google chrome finally let me download the file instead of removing it everytime, and windows defender also quit calling it quarantine, I was able to try the editor.

1654868726002.png

The problem was when I tried to download the file, chrome would remove it saying not to use it. I used a downloader app instead, but Windows defender quarantine it as well. I'm not sure what changed between then and now but I was able to download it with chrome and windows defender doesn't report any issues now.

As for the editor, it works. Obtained all the DLC items with one button click. Since for some reason, it wouldn't work the intended way, with a actual console and internet connection. It always has a error and is been this way for few years according to some pages looking for the error. it's nice knowing the save editor can do it. Would it be possible to add a play time editor? (It's probably useless feature but I seen other save editors have it) Thank you :)

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if there's interest in a Dragon Quest VIII save editor? I'm considering making one, but just want to know if it's of any use to anyone and what features people might want.

EDIT:

The save editor is now available.
Features:
- Modify device ID
- Edit all 3 save slots
- Play time
- Gold, casino tokens
- Select alchemy pot
- Modify location (all slots) / coordinates (I think this only works on the quicksave slot)
- Bag contents (includes complete inventory list inc. DLC items)
- Modify hero name
- Activate/deactivate characters

Hi there good sir!
I am currently playing on mobile version, and wondering if there's also any cahnce to edit my game save file. I've been for way too long and it seems that the devs drastically dropped the rate of killing metal slimes on mobile version. If so, it would mean a world for me. Thank you and godbless!
