If my internet connection uses a different type that the 3DS can't use (wpa) what will the 3ds do? How will it update?
Is this good if I always want my flashcart to work?

Solution
Without a working internet connection your 3DS will not be able to download updates from the internet.

However, Nintendo may offer updates via other means such as including them on game cartridges, or allowing you to download them on your PC and install them from the SD card.

You should be able to avoid updating for as long as you want, but it will mean you miss out on new features that Nintendo introduce with their updates, and maybe newer 3DS games will not work without a certain update.
I thought the 3DS supports wpa?

Anyway, to answer your question, the 3DS won't force updates. It will, however, connect to the internet to INFORM YOU that an update is available via the notification log from the home menu. You can then choose whether to download or not from the settings. :)

If the DSi supports WPA (Not on DS games, only the system Menu and such) then most likely the 3DS will, hopefully putting it on 3DS games too, because I have WPA aswell.
