3DS Analog Confirmed By Sources...Again

Hopefully Nintendo will learn from Sony's mistake and realize that a single analog stick would be half-assing it. If this thing has anything close to last-gen power, then I don't want to be controlling it like an old 16-bit game, and most of the time, touchscreen controls don't cut it.

Like on the Zelda games for the DS.

You must be joking the touch screen controls worked great with the zelda, almost perfectly.

I hope they put in analogs, I hated playing FPS's with the touch screen and I didn't like using the D-PAD either. I pray Nintendo put in 2 analogs and NOT make the same mistakes Sony made with the PSP.

Then Nintendo will finally rule over Sony's handhelds. Then we will live happily ever after.
Nintendo ALREADY p0wns Sony. It's just that you see more hipster kids with PSPs on the streets than cool kids with DS's.

Not a chance! I see WAY more DS' then PSP's around

Why? Cuz everyone knows PSP sucks

I only see idiots listen music in PSP and playing football games.

Well, I don't know. But it's good if it has both D-Pad and an analog stick. And yes, Zelda is pretty much the only touch controlled game that I liked playing.

Eh, I don't care about analog sticks, I'm happy with my d-pad.
But I guess this is just another plus.
In 3D it would be useful.

Good news it's a short stick too, since that would mean their ugly mock-up would be wrong (the screen would get some mad scratchin').

At least one analog stick is a must. A lot more 3D games (graphically, not the screen effect) are inevitably going to come with the increased power of the 3DS. And honestly, my thumb hurts after playing KH/PS0/SM64DS. Two would be greatly preferred, but one is absolutely essential.

Except that PSP was marketed by Sony as a media device, i'd say just as much as it is marketed as a game system. It's one of the primary selling points. You can't blame the DS for being equally crappy at doing those things when it wasn't intended to do that stuff. To be fair though, i always found the sound quality (with headphones) to be quite great on DS. And the Lite/DSi are small enough to fit in your pocket like an MP3 player. I can't just put the PSP in my pocket as easily due to its fragility. I'd be worried about breaking the flimsy thing. At least, non-Go models.

Happy we might get analog, i'm happy with just one stick. We never needed two on the N64 and it was a very competent 3D game controller. And people hate the PSP not so much for the lack of a second analog, but rather because the nub sucks so hard. I'd rather have a nub than nothing though TBH.

I'm more curious how they can maintain a clamshell design with such a protruding stick. Unless the stick is set into the system, in a kind of depression. I think the PSP Go did that, but again it was just a small nub, not a stick.

Analog Stick = Better Mario Kart controls. Heck, i got soo used to the analog in Mario Kart Double Dash, I just fail at playing it on DS (Never got round to playing Super Circuit)

People would be throwing away their psp's, and robbing houses for money for the 3DS.

I have a friend that only plays music on his PSP. No games for it at all.

In thinking more about this "mock up", it seems that the screen proportions (aside from the fact I don't believe the final 3DS unit will have a 4x3 screen) are completely off.

Assuming for a moment that the 3-D widescreen LCD Nintendo is using is Sharp's parallax barrier touhscreen that recently went into mass production, that makes it 3.4" across the diagonal. With its 854x480 resolution, it has a roughly 16:9 aspect ratio, or ~1.78:1. That would put its other measurements at 2.96" across and 1.67" tall.

So compared to the DS Lite's screen, that 3.4" widescreen is less than half an inch longer... 0.47", to be precise; and due to the widescreen proportions it's actually 0.2" shorter than a DS Lite screen. Compared to the DSi's screen there's even less of a difference in length, only 0.36" longer... and 0.28" shorter.

Based on that, the presentation of the widescreen in that mock up is considerably larger than it should be... it also means that there shouldn't be any problem in something the size of a DS Lite (or perhaps just 0.5" - 1" longer) accomodating dual widescreen LCDs while keeping enough room for the buttons/D pad/analog stick.

For anyone that's interested, the green area in this indicates the true dimensions of the Sharp parallax barrier touchscreens relative to the bottom, DSi touchscreen.
