Regardless of what could have been done. Your best bet now since you have a NAND backup, is to get a hardmod to fix it.

The backup he has is no good, he/she overwrote the good one. I see it in the LOG.
Just saying you could try to recover the NAND backup with recovery software. Flash media has wear leveling and it "might" be possible to recover the NAND bin.
He already overwritten it, I've tried this before. Once it's been overwritten once, it can't be recovered. The nand you recover will be garbage.
Maybe, but like I said, due to the way current flash media technology stores data, just because you overwrite the file, it doesn't mean the file is actually gone. The space that contained the backup could very well have the the data but is marked as free space. If the flash card is not a high capacity i.e MLC flash. It could still be there. Just saying. Also I have tried to recovery files from flash before, sometimes one program gets shit and the other one gets something. Now I know a large file is a little more difficult to get back without corruption but hey might be lucky. What harm could there be if it at least tried?
I used multiple programs to recover and same results everytime. Due to the size of the NAND, it typically will write over that sector every time.

Chances are end user is using 4gig sd card that is typically full or close to it while doing the CTR transfer portions. So, the data would be over written. I say this based of experience of trying to recover, user had 3 different copies of nands and deleted them, over written them, I tried recover, recovered all 3 to be corrupt each time as they had been over written already.
He can try it, but still needs a hardmod to even attempt.
Dude if you just bought it, you should have a receipt. Return it to the store as a factory defect so it doesn't go back on the shelf or whatever, and they'll send it back to Nintendo to get credit. You get a refund/exchange, and Ninty can either fix it to resell, or they can trash it. Either way, it won't be your problem and you won't screw someone else. Best of luck.
You know that's illegal right? Buy something, then break it and return it as "defective". If you return it to the store, who then returns it to Nintendo can probably find out why it's the way it is .. Whether it'll come back to bite him or not I don't know, but that's some stupid advice you've given right there.
I don't think anyone here can advocate for what's wrong and what isn't when we're all hacking which is also illegal. Not to mention, they don't now whether it was a hardware failure or whatever else. SOrry to burst your bubble but installing A9LH is NOT the only thing that can corrupt your NAND. So morally wrong or not, it's NOT illegal for him to return a defunct product period. If you buy a phone, and it stops working within a few days, you return it right? I don't see why you're acting like anyone is losing out on anything. Yeah he might be lying about how he broke the DS but that really doesn't matter one way or the other when hardware failure falls under warranty of the distributor. Do you know how many people throw their phone in a fit of rage and break it only to call their insurance to say they dropped it? Yeah, same thing. Nintendo will take it and refurbish it then resell it either way. Go be an ass somewhere else.
And you don't seem to be aware of what warranties are dude. They EXIST in the event you buy something and accidentally break it. You get another one. It's called consumer protection. Yeah, if your destroyed something on PURPOSE it might be wrong, but most people (even bricking consoles) do it on accident. If it's still within warranty of the store, it's completely fair and legal even if it was on purpose or not. Again, the phone thing.

Installing A9LH is not the only way to corrupt NAND no, but his NAND is corrupted because he attempted to install A9LH so I don't see what that has to do with anything. Ya know US isn't the only country in the world? And even in US the laws vary by state to state. I wouldn't be able to tell you if doing what you suggested is illegal in any of them, but that doesn't mean it can't be illegal. I said your advice is stupid, because if it was illegal and if it did come back to bite him he'd be in trouble. I didn't comment on it because it's "morally wrong". Lol I don't give a shit if it's morally wrong .. I pirate games and content, which is effectively stealing. And I will continue to do so as long as there's no chance of me getting caught.

I'd like to add I'm talking about product guarantees through the distributor, not the manufacturer. More often than not you have 15-30 days to return ANY product for ANY reason for a refund, even if you just don't like it. There is nothing "wrong" about returning that console. The customer will get their money and a 2nd chance (why should they be out $200?), the distributor will get their merchant credit and the manufacturer will repair it and sell it as refurbished. That's standard practice dude.

Well the OP IS in the US and like I said, it's standard practice across the board for most corporations regardless of the state. State laws don't govern trade and commerce, period unless they are stricter than federal. That's a government established level called the FTC and is the same everywhere across the country. Sorry, but what I suggested is in no way illegal, wrong or otherwise unwarranted.

You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60
