Hello there tempers!!!
Lately the forums are like 3DStemp, and yes , seems that the 3ds scene got hot these last week's with all those releases.

But among such amazing releases and Warez loaders, there is always an ugly dark side: the temible and feared for everyone bricks.

Well, lately many threads talking about such bricks or accidents have been surfacing, so I decided to make this thread, mainly to have everyone informed and help the nooks to don't take any risky procedure to their consoles. So I will post the many ways and forms that can transform your 3ds to a nice and expensive paperweight, and post yours too, the op will get updated with them all.

And as a plus, since I have two hardmoded 3ds's, I'll take requests too!!
So if you wanna do something to your console but don't want to take the risk, I'll test right away to see if it worked or I got a brick, and of course, por the results here.

So, let's begin, and the main question will always be...

What you did to brick your 3ds?

<<<As a general rule, if something read/writes or edits sysNAND there's a chance it could brick, so avoid tinkering with it if you don't know what you're doing.>>>

POTENTIAL GENERAL 3DS, O3DS/XL CAUSES:
  • Tried to change the region of my 3DS, but had accidentally installed something at the wrong point of the procedure and bricked it.
So always be sure of what are you doing and read instructions carefully.
  • Tried to update my 3DS to 9.2 with cias, but I decided to install these cias with the DEVMenu instead of Sysupdater. An error occurred and the 3DS was history... But a hard mod quickly fixed it... After 6 hours.
NEVER USE ANYTHING THAT ISN'T SYSUPDATER TO UPDATE YOUR CONSOLE.
  • When you put / inject something in the sysNAND without being aware what it is and what it writes.
  • When you edit something in the sysNAND and you don't have any idea what the heck it is.
  • Downgrading sysNAND through Gateway and interrupting the porccess or remove some in-use part of the 3DS (SD Card, Battery, Charger)
  • Creating an emuNAND through Gateway and interrupt the procces, or doing it without enough space on the SD card.
  • Upgrading sysNAND by not using the official System Update (AKA sysupdater via .cias.)
  • A hard mod gone wrong bricked my last o3ds...
Remember kids, always do this under the supervision of someone experienced... not your uncle.

SPECIFIC 2DS CAUSES:
Nothing known yet.

SPECIFIC NEW 3DS CAUSES:
  • Donwgraded New 3ds Mset 4.x sysnand then formatted sysnand .... i guess ... not good at all, bricked 3ds.
Never try to format or update a modified MSET firmware, first of all, you had to have a NAND backup and restore it, if not, then leave your sysNAND as it is, or find or wait a way to restore MSET before doing anything.

There's a screwdriver set at my local grocery store that will do the job and probably for cheaper than what you ordered it for online.

Well, I had the screwdriver before, but my mom had lost it while cleaning up her room, and my other bigger screwdriver only opened the back case. Plus, I could spare with $3 extra off my amazon giftcard ^_^

I did a hardmod to my O3DS some days ago and works pretty well, my first one was made by one of my teachers at the University, and is still working to date. I did follow a guide that was posted in the xl thread, the only tricky pinout was the clk with is very small and tedious to find or uncover, you need either to remove the gamecard reader or the whole mobo.

Here some pictures.

Bricks are everywhere. Most of us try to avoid it. Some can't get out of it's way.

Everyday hackers risk BRICKING, CORRUPTION, DELETION, and irreversible damage.

There's a lot of ways to wind up bricked. The fact that your device survives it all, means you read the OP.

Because every day, a "temper" faces. 1000 WAYS TO BRICK YOUR 3DS....

WARNING: THE FACTS POSTED IN THIS THREAD ARE BASED ON REAL BRICKS AND ARE EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. DO *NOT* ATTEMPT TO TRY ANY OF THE ACTIONS POSTED.

YOU WILL BRICK!!!!

- When you put / inject something in the sysNAND.
- When you edit something in the sysNAND.
- Downgrading sysNAND thru Gateway.
- Creating an emuNAND thru Gateway.
- Upgrading sysNAND by not using the official System Update

As a general rule, if something read/writes or edits sysNAND there's a chance it could brick, so avoid tinkering with it? :P

I tried to mess with emunand but RXTools errored and injected something into sysnand. ;-;

Remember to be careful with what cia's you use with sysupdater

Yesterday i bricked my ALBW XL, Here's how:
Installed Sysupdater
Downloaded 9.2.0-20 with 3dnus
Updated successfully.....
Wait, what the fuck, why is my system only 9.0........
Strange...
Now, the bricking part
Downloaded 9.2.0 & 9.2.0 (stage 2) with UpdateCDN
installed those files with sysupdater
BRICK

Anyway, i still have legit games and my 9.4.0 MM-N3DS...
I'm waiting for some nice connectors to arrive so i can make myself a pretty nand mod. (around the end of july)

Can I also brick my 3DS if I make a sysnand backup, format the system and then try to flash back the original nand backup?
