Mario Video Game Marathon to Raise Thousands for Charity
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA - Starting Friday, July 22, a group of video-game enthusiasts in Adelaide, Australia will host a “Mario & Friends” Marathon raising money for World Youth International. Since late 2010, the group has already raised over $14,000 for various charities. World Youth International is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve the standards of education for children in developing countries.

The Mario & Friends Marathon will be broadcast live online, where thousands of viewers will tune in to watch and donate. Over a duration of three days, several players will take shifts to complete a selection of games involving well-known Nintendo characters such as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong. The team will interact with viewers of the marathon through a chat box, and hope to leverage social media services such as Twitter and Facebook to spread the word about the charity drive.

All donations solicited will go directly to an Adelaide-based non-profit organisation, World Youth International (WYI). WYI is family-driven and has been supporting children globally since 1988. The players hope to raise enough money to fund the construction of a medical clinic in Odede, Kenya. “Our goal is to provide education, health care, and specific trade skills to young women and men,” said Terry Hoey, WYI Manager. “Once they complete their studies, WYI will assist to re-immerse them back into their communities and help them to establish their own business.”

The group, known as GameToAid, raised $4,300 for WYI in a 72-hour marathon last year, and raised $10,600 for charity: water in a 60-hour marathon in February. Their events have received over 4 million total views. “It?s a great way for gamers to give back to the community," said Toby Zerner, event coordinator, "and to oppose the typically negative perception of video-gaming.”
