Ratchet & Clank is a game developed by Insomniac Games, based on the upcoming film by Rainmaker Entertainment, which was based on the original R&C game from 2002. Is the series debut on PS4 up to snuff?

attachFull46163

When Ratchet & Clank made its debut on the PlayStation 2 in 2002, it became an instant success. The game sold over 3.5 million copies and was praised by critics for its dynamic worlds, breathtaking graphics, and a vast collection of awesome weapons. Since then, the unlikely duo of Ratchet and Clank went on to star in over a dozen more intergalactic adventures, gaining a strong and dedicated following throughout.  Admittedly, not every adventure was a success.  So does the 2016 game based on a 2016 movie based on a 2002 game do the series justice?  Let’s find out!

Ratchet & Clank for PS4 is a reinterpretation of the original game, as told through the larger than life Captain Quark.  As a result, this game is a great starting point for new fans of the series as it is the first game chronologically.  You don’t have to know a single thing about these characters beforehand.  That said, this game was made in conjunction with the animated feature film that’ll hit theatres later in April, so you may want to check that out as well. This version of the game brings a lot to the table, including stunning HD graphics, a vast range of characters, and humor suitable for kids and adults alike (there’s a character named Skid McMarx…  SKID MCMARX!)

attachFull46164

The updated graphics came at a cost, however.  The game runs at a solid 30 FPS to compensate for the intense graphics, but honestly, it’s no big deal.  The controls are still tight, the camera pans quickly, and reactions still feel fast.  The most snobby of critics may find playing a game that runs any less than a constant 60 FPS appalling, but the average gamer is more likely to just appreciate the beauty of the game.

Right from the get-go, we’re thrown into a colorful, high-octane adventure of galactic proportions. The plot that drives the story is told both during the cinematic cutscenes and while adventuring, seamlessly mixing the story and the gameplay together.

The action sequences, while occasionally short, flow on without the slightest hitch and there are many planets to explore and find collectibles in.  Collectibles include gold nuts and holo cards which can both be used in various ways. The game starts you off with the traditional hand gun, wrench, and a set of grenades, but weapon selection evolves quickly to contain far more than that. These weapons are just as fun to use as ever, and the fan favorite ‘Groovitron’ is back and better than ever!  With it you can force your enemies to groove like there’s no tomorrow.  Literally…  Because they die.  You force them to dance to their deaths.  You’re a monster. Weapons that force enemies to dance and transform into sheep are typical of Insomniac, but that doesn’t make them any less entertaining after all of these years.

Ratchet & Clank has a certain RPG element to it.  Like previous Ratchet & Clank games, but unlike in the PS2 original, you can upgrade your weapons through multiple uses.  During your first playthrough you can only rank your weapons up to level 5, but once you unlock challenge mode by beating the game you can rank them all up to level 10. This, along with a truck load of collectibles to collect, helps to make up for the game’s relatively short length.  Somebody who wants to just charge through the story can beat it in about 10-12 hours, give or take.  That’s my major complaint, I wish that the game’s story was longer.  However, if you’re someone like me who wants to stop to smell the roses, gather all the collectibles, complete all the missions, level up all of your guns, play on the hardest difficulty, and get that precious platinum trophy; it can take quite a bit more time.

When it comes to reimaginings of older games, you win some and lose some.  Where they added planets and objectives in some cases, they also removed some beloved planets from the original game – probably due to time constraints or a desire to streamline the experience.  That said, this game still has every environment imaginable.  Green pastures, volcanoes, skyscrapers, frozen tundras, deserts, you name it!  At any rate, the omission of those planets might be a turn off for some gamers who feel they won’t be getting the full experience.

Throughout the game I wondered who the target audience really was.  By the end I concluded that both young and old can enjoy the game and that it’s targeted to both.  Much like Pee-wee’s Playhouse had humor obviously meant for kids, mixed with subtle humor meant for adults – Ratchet & Clank continues its tradition of cracking jokes that make kids smile and their parents wink knowingly at each other.  The game can be simple enough for children to play (remember that it’s rated E10) on the easiest mode, but even trained adult gamers can struggle on hard mode, especially searching for all those precious collectibles.

To end on a high note, let me bring up my absolute favorite thing about the game…  its price.  While most AAA titles today - especially with names as big as Ratchet & Clank – retail for $60, Insomniac made the decision to sell this one at only $40.  It isn’t this price because it doesn’t hold up to current standards, I would actually argue the contrary and say that this game meets or exceeds the standards of many games today.  The official reason that the game is $40 is simply because the original game was $40 and Insomniac wanted to honor that price.  Whatever the true reason is, I truly believe that this game is a great value and that Ratchet & Clank veterans and newcomers alike should give this title a shot.

At the end of the day, it's hard not to fall in love with the new Ratchet & Clank. Leave it to Insomniac to maintain what made the original game so amazing 14 years ago, while still adding a modern twist to attract a new generation.

As the plumber would say, see you in the next reboot!

I gotta say this is one of the better games that I've played in the last few years. It met and exceeded my expectations. Enough for me to play through it 3 times to get my first Platinum Trophy.

My only gripe is that the game is so short through. It only took me about 10 hours to get all of the gold bolts and weapons. About 15 for Holocards due to the RNG aspect.

Working on this game since last Tuesday. Its beautiful. I feel like this is what would happen if we had fantasy technology where you could take your Ratchet and Clank PS2 disk and have your PS4 create a 2016 version of the game.

The 30 FPS gameplay doesn't bother me. Your review is just an opinion and not a fact. Anyway, my best friend of 20 years loved Ratchet & Clank series for PS3 and he is going to get it. It is not a sequel but a new game for PS4. :)

Oh it doesn't bother me at all either to be honest. But I know some people are picky like that. And yes it's a great game!

I guess I'll be somewhat opposite from a lot of the comments. I've played every other Ratchet game and the first three, to me, are the best ones. I think this game is great if you've never played a Ratchet game before but for me I didn't enjoy the game all too much. I personally feel they should have stuck with 60 FPS as that was what all the main series Ratchet games were before this one. I have quite a few complaints but it's mainly just comparing to the first four games. I think I was just hoping for the first true Ratchet game in a long while and this didn't deliver that to me, I felt like I was playing more of Into the Nexus. Overall this just didn't feel like a Ratchet game to me and I wasn't very happy overall with what I got.

About the "the average gamer is more likely to just appreciate the beauty of the game." - a non laggy experience is part of beauty. And yes, 30 fps is by definition lag. I still got the game, gonna play it soon and I'll probably adore it, but the fact that it's not 60 fps is gonna be a huge mark on it's score for me.

I never played Ratchet and Clank games and was wondering if I had to start on PS2, but you just answered my questions :D
I don't know anything about this series, but your review decided me to buy this one.
It looks like a mix of starfox adventure and Knack (sorry if I'm wrong lol).

Short games are great or me, as I don't have lot of time to spend on a single game. 30FPS is not an issue for me as I often play oldies.

Though, I have a question about the other games : where are they located compared to this remake ?
Are PS3 R&C following this remake, or would you have to play the old ones as separate story line starting from PS2 again?

Essentially, this game follows the same story as the original as told through Captain Quark. So yes this is a perfect starting point and all of the other games are still canon and take place after this game. I wouldn't necessarily even say that they are two different universes. Perhaps the original game is still canon because it depicts the actual in-universe events while this game is essentially a story about the first game. I hope that makes sense, it's way too late for me to be writing!

I bought it yesterday and I like it :)
I don't see any issue with the frame rate, I don't really understand why users compare 30fps with lag.

All is nice and well done. Though I often wonder what's different from the first game, as it's "told from someone's point of view".
Maybe the French dub is not as nice as the english one, too bad there's no option to switch the language in-game, I prefer keeping my PS4 interface in English but some games don't display any options and use the console's language by default. I had to change the system language to French to get French audio+sub, there's no mix English audio+French sub. I had some difficulties reading/understanding english jokes, so I switched to French.

I'm excited for this but man do developers need to get their heads out of their asses and realise compromising framerate is not worth making the game look that little bit more shiny. 30 FPS is a monstrosity that takes away a lot from a game; it's so heartbreaking being a fan of the Souls series and hating 30 FPS lol

Completely agree. I've put a decent amount of time into R&C now and it is GREAT, but man the frame rate is tanking HARD. It's a real shame. Why is it so fucking taboo to let players choose the graphic settings on a console? For us who rather prefer the game to run smooth than being shiny, let us turn the graphics down and give us those frames back..

I'll probably give it a go and see if I like it. I'm still wondering why it's locked at 30fps, it doesn't even look that intense.

It looks AMAZING and c'mon, it's a console. It fucking sucks that it's 30 fps but it's evident they couldn't combine the graphics and the framerate. As I mentioned above though, I'd gladly lower the graphics for 60 fps.

I just got the Platinum trophy on this a couple hours ago, I enjoyed this "reboot",especially with the PS4's upgraded visuals. I hope R&C will get another PS4 game to continue this reboot but I doubt it as Into the Nexus was the sendoff for the Series and this game was made to promote the movie.

I wouldn't mind an HD remaster of the PS3 games as the graphics appear fuzzy when compared to the look of the PS3 remaster of the PS2 games.

Hoping the updated PS4 console that's apparently coming out comes out with a 60fps patch. I'd honestly buy a PS4 then.

is it shorter than the ps3 remake?
A bit, but not enough to make the game too short. It is also easier to beat because of these two things:
You never battle Chairmen Drek like in the original, and that boss fight was challenging to say the least
You do not need to beat the game 7 times over or use the bolt farming glitch to get 1 Million bolts to get the trophy and thus the platinum trophy like the PS3 version

I preordered it, and i am very satisfied. I am that kind of guy that likes to do all the missions, and collect every golden nut etc. I haven't finsihed yet, but it's amazing so far. People have been talking about that the game will have bugs from the start, but i haven't seen any bugs yet. I'm aiming for the platinum this time.

I think enough people are commenting about it that I feel I should mention... I was really stretching when I put 30fps as a downfall. Seriously, it's no big deal at all in this game. I can understand people who haven't played the game yet could think it's a deterrent, but to be truthful the game plays perfectly.

I completed it today :)
I played in hard (some boss were hard for me, but I beat it in hard without cheating).
Maybe I'll try the new unlocked difficulty to complete some easy trophies (max HP, all weapons, etc.)

Like I said on previous comment, I don't understand why users think 30fps is an issue. The game is/was nice. very few lags, only noticed them on the big cannon mission, when there are too many explosions at the same time.
You have a cheat to make the game runs faster, but it's harder as enemies and camera move faster, not the fps.

Ps: I don't even know how you can detect the FPS. How do you know it's 30 and not 25 or 50 ?

It's certainly not 50. It's definitely around 30. It's something I've gotten used to feeling. If you really wanna check which frame rate the game runs at, record some footage, then check it in a video editor in a 60 fps project. It's gonna update every other frame, meaning 30 fps :P

Very rarely do games run in anything other than 30 or 60, unless it's on a PC. It could be 25 but it's very unlikely just because the fact that no games really do that, unless we're talking PAL / NTSC formats.
If you're one of those people who say you can't see the difference between 30 and 60, since you have a PS4, go download the Ni-Oh demo on the store. It's the first console game I've ever seen that lets you choose between frame rate and graphics. Try leaving it on movie mode, play for a minute, then change to action mode and the difference is night and day, and in a game like Ni-Oh, a high frame rate is definitely preferable cause it's a game that relies on reaction.

Anyway, Ratchet and Clank is great. I think I'm closing in on the ending myself, 8/10 so far.
