Depends on the game, and if there's a Download Play function or not.
You need to have wifi on for both systems for Download Play to work.
If you want to play online with other 3ds you have to set up Wiimmfi, you need to change the dns on the ds system settings and the game's settings. And you have to set up a WEP hotspot on your phone (or a WiFi connection) with no password..

It's honestly annoying having to use a hotspot to be able to use Wiimmfi. There's literally no way to set the router to WEP and we absolutely don't want to remove password protection.

No password isn't really much worse than WEP, just don't leave the router set to that constantly. If anything I kinda prefer no password as it doesn't lull you into a false sense of security that WEP can give, leaving a WEP network up all the time is not a good idea.

You can replace your stock router firmware with Gargoyle or DDWRT to get WEP support.

If you live in an apartment, maybe. If you live in a house, the odds of an attacker sitting outside trying to crack your network are pretty low.

Yeah, it's not very likely but chances are you've still got neighbors, if you leave a WEP network up 24/7 it's far from impossible that someone nearby would crack it, whether just for the fun, free internet, illegal downloads, whatever.

On an open network you can also set up MAC filtering which again isn't great security but it's also better than nothing if you're concerned, I still wouldn't leave it up 24/7 open though.

I would never recommend using your main router for DS online in any case, just use a hotspot or go to a thrift store and pick up a crappy old router for a couple dollars, the crappier and older the better lol

I was using WEP with MAC address filtering for about 15 years, until the old router finally died recently. If I were in an apartment complex, I would have considered that to be much more risky. If your Wi-Fi strength is so high that people next door can reliably connect to your network, you might want to reduce your transmission power. :P

Most people's main networks are plenty strong enough for that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not saying it's likely necessarily, it's just best to consider WEP as more or less the same thing as open in terms of actual security

Don't have the router's login and password. My dad does, and he frequently thinks that restricting download speeds for certain devices is completely OK even though there is no data cap.

The only way to then connect to Wimmfi is a hotspot set to no pass.

While it's true that WEP has a lot more crappy security than WPA does, my neighbors are as follows:
- Neighbor #1 is obsessed with decorations. Literally their entire parking slot, their backyard and all is decorated with thousands worth of decorations.
- Neighbor #2 is the type that is drunk 99% of the entire time and watching soccer in the 1%.

Do you really think that any of them has an idea what WEP is, and has a WiFi password cracker installed on their devices ready to attack? The general consensus is that if the WiFi has no lock, it is up for grabs, but any lock and it's a no-go unless you obtain the password. Doesn't matter if it's WEP or WPA2-PSK.

Of course, then there's the "what if" moment. Maybe one of them really has a cracker ready to go and break through the shabby, rusted padlock that WEP is. It's probably best to keep running the hotspot and have the router set up to the latest standard.

I disagree. It takes skill and appropriate tools to crack a WEP network, and most people lack both. WEP is certainly better than nothing in terms of keeping unwanted people from leeching your Wi-Fi.

IIRC WPA2 got cracked fairly recently, so if you want a truly secure network, you can't use Wi-Fi at all if you're worried about skilled people hacking into your network.
