Elon Musk buys out Twitter for $44 billion, plans to take company private

We've long become used to gaming industry buyouts; between Microsoft and Sony's recent acquisitions, and future rumors, it's of little surprise to see a smaller studio scooped up by an infinitely larger one. But over in the tech world, there's been a buyout a little weirder than usual; on Monday, Twitter was bought by the ever-eccentric world's richest man, Elon Musk. The cost of the deal totals a staggering $44 billion--$54.20 per share of stock. Following this, Musk plans to make Twitter a privately-owned company, and the full acquisition is set to take place later in 2022.

In regards to the buyout, Elon Musk stressed that he wants to improve Twitter by adding new features, making the site's algorithms open source, and focusing on "free speech", claiming that the company has a lot of potential. Employees of Twitter expressed frustration at the lack of transparency from the higher-ups within the company about the buyout, and nervousness as they were unsure what would happen to their jobs, as Musk plans to make drastic changes in the future.

"Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," said Mr. Musk. "I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it."

That man just got to much money. Instead of claiming the brave rescuers from the Thailand cave rescue mission,
for being pedophile. Just because they woulden't use Musk's mini sub,
then you should invest a few or more billions in climate change. Money well spend

Does this mean we'll get to see how they were censoring whatever opinions the site's operators disagreed with? Because that would be hilarious.

You must be a lover of fake news and disinformation. Also, removing content that is against the ToS a person agreed upon when creating an accout at a private companies website is not censorship or a loss of freedom of speech. It's like saying being punished for a crime is taking away ones freedom to commit the crime. It just doesn't work the way you think it does, or would like it to.

freedom of speech never left my soul. I said all the things i want to say irregardless of if they offend people or im censored because of it. when people ban me just get a new ip and a new email and curse them out so they ban me again. they cannot take what you do not give them.
Freedom of speech is very important, and censorship just ends up covering people's mouths and not leading to conversations.
If you don't agree with people it's best to have a talk about it, and be willing to take their opinion into account.
With that said, "irregardless" is not a word. I'm pro-free speech but with existing words :P

Personally I find it amusing that GBAtemp's own twatter was not plugged during the story it is so irrelevant for much of the day to day here.

Anyway hope we get to peer into the censorship machine as that is bound to be some interesting info. Don't much care otherwise -- not like chat programs are hard to come by.

I don't have a Twitter account nor plan on creating one regardless of who owns the site. However, it will be nice to see the censorship toned down a bit. It seems that the sites moderators would censor political stuff and opinions they disagree with. I know a private company has the right to censor whatever they want, but by doing so they were no friend of free speech.

I don't know what you've been smoking, but Twitter is notorious for censoring opposing viewpoints. Their members cry racism and *phobic when they come across something they dislike or don't agree with and even though the content is neither racist or *phobic its removed by the moderators. I'll be happy to see people being allowed to share their opinions and beliefs and not have to be scared their content will be deleted.

No is called Twitter nothing changes just that now the rules are applied to everyone. not sure how anyone could possibly be against it
They believe like Pocahontas and Obama that free speech is dangerous to our "democracy". Mass censorship and letting companies abuse us however they want are our values.

I still won't be signing up to be among a bunch of braindead trash, but it can't really get any worse.
