HI ive been modding my Wii for about the last week and when i was downloading both WII and Game Cube games i had no idea what a nightmare the dreaded NKIT format would be. Well it was only after downloading about 12 games for the game cube and 10 games for the Wii that i realized what a problem this would be later when it came to attempting to convert them in Wii back up manager. ON a side note the Wii back up manager also seams to have a certain adversion for anything in the disk image format either. I could be wrong but what ive grown to understand from countless hours of reading is that an NKIT file is simply a ISO file that has been compressed to save space.
Because the ultimate goal of course is to get these files in a WBFS format so that they play on USB Loader GX. I cant began to tell you how many different programs useless programs ive downloaded in the last week attempting in vain to restore these files back to true ISos. OSF Mount,WiiBaFu, IMG to ISO & several others. And omg yes lol ive downloaded and tried several times what seams like every ones favorite to suggest NKIT. Now alot of these programs as you know will simply error when you try to mount the NKIT or Disk image file.
However what ive found is that the other half will claim to have converted the file back to its true ISO state and you click on properties looks good says ISO however when you attempt to mount it in Wii backup manager it will either one not mount it or two more common it will say a 1.5gb file is 2mbs..UGGGG. So i dont really have the time patience or hours any more to download countless programs that dont work so i thought i would try here. So please has anyone cracked the NKIT/Disk image riddle that is blocking these files from being converted by Wii back up manager. Thank you.

Nkit is great, and you just use the Nkit application itself to convert to iso and then use WiiBackupManager as per usual to convert to WBFS. You don't need any other programs than that, or to mount files.

I can help you more if you explain what you're doing or what's going wrong exactly. I convert from Nkit to WBFS all the time using those two programs and the whole process takes less than a minute.

Well i dont have any problem running the nkit file through NKit. After it does its conversion thing it says the file is an ISO when i click on properties but then when i go to run it through WiiBackupManager like i do with other files every time it says the file is only 2mbs. Any help is appreciated. p.s well i partially got some help. I downloaded Wii Back Up Fusion and i was pleased to find that it was able to convert about 65% of my games in question to wbfs . HOwever the remaining 45% that are tagged Nkits conversion failed.
I did go back and gave the NKIT app another shot and everytime with the Nkit files " Conversion failed".

Hello, I have the same issue and a lot of doubts xD
I hacked my Wii a few days ago and transferred all the roms I had in my PC to the External HDD, so far they work great (SNES, N64, GameCube). However, the main reason for me to modify my Wii was to be able to play Metroid Prime Trilogy and perhaps some Mario games here and there. I did a lot of research since last night here regarding Nkit.iso convert to normal .iso then to .wbfs

I'm currently stuck at nkit.iso -> .iso lol I can't seem to satisfactory convert Pikmin saying "VerifyFailed". So here are a couple of questions on the NKIT 1.4 program:

1- Should I be using "NKit Processing App" or "NKit Extraction App"?
2- Do I want the "Convert to ISO" or "Extract to ISO" option?
3- Is there a way to bypass the VerifyFailed? I read about unticking the "Delete Recovery Match Failure" box, which I tried both with and without the checkmark, and it still fails.
4- I have Nintendont and USBLoader GX, is there a way (HDD Folder structure-wise) that I can place all my roms (SNES, GC, N64) to be able to load directly from USBLoader GX? (Currently using snes9gx and not64 to play those roms).
5- Where CleanRip stores my ripped Wii games? I ripped two last night and can't find them.
6- I constantly keep getting this error message:

For starters, you should download the redump dat file for your games. http://redump.org/downloads/ - This is one reason your verify fails, because it doesn't have a database to compare the converted dumps to. You will have to download the datfiles for Wii and GameCubes from there, and save them to the Dats folder found inside where your nkit programs are. Make sure you save them into the sub-directories for each system, ie Dats\Redump\Wii and Dats\Redump\GameCube

There is a website that holds all the update partition data for use with nkit, but the website also includes a page for downloading the actual game discs in nkit format, so I can't share the link. However a google search for nkit recovery partitions should show a few links to places that may have the update partitions and maybe other stuff. Again, I can't provide the exact website only due to it having full games on there as well. The update partitions are only needed in case you have a bad dump from your own games, due to either bad software, a scratch on the disc, or something else, and need a good update partition file to compare or replace in case your own private dump ends up missing that.

@Dimensional
Thank you very much! I think I found it, downloading atm. I'll post an update with the results after I finish. Thanks again.

Okay it WORKED!

Had to do a couple of other things too so I'm going to list them in case someone else is experiencing the same issue that I am.

  • Downloaded the NKit 1.4 + Wii.dat to convert my nkit.iso to regular .iso
  • Used WiiBackupManager to convert said .isos to wbfs
  • Had to install cISO 249, 250, and 251
  • Changed the settings in GXLoaderUSB's Loader to 250 (if that makes any sense :P)
Voila! Playing Metroid as God intended

Thanks again for everything, saved my sanity in this quarantine lol

Depends on what cIOS setup you are using. If you have 249=base 56 and 250=base 57 which is the most common setup, 250 should only be required for a small amount of games, as most work perfectly fine with base 56. In that case you should change the per game IOS to 250 just for the games that need it. But you may have a non standard setup.

Weird. Any idea if your nkit files work in Dolphin? I don't know what would cause this. I wouldn't mess around using more and more programs though, because it really is a straightforward process.

You need:

*Nkit (specifically you'll use the "NKitProcessingApp" executable),

*Optional - the relevant DAT files for verification (doesn't actually matter if you don't have them, you'll just get a verification failed message, but the ISO will still work),

*Optional - the Wii recovery partition files if for some reason you want to make a 1:1 exact copy of the original ISO (i.e. you don't actually need this, since you're scrubbing the ISO into WBFS),

*Optional - wiitdb.txt from GameTdb for automatically naming your output files,

*and finally Wii Backup Manager to convert the ISO into a WBFS file.

Method:

*Optional - put all your relevant DAT files, Wii recovery files and GameTdb info into the relevant directories in your Nkit folder.

*Open NKitProcessingApp, drag your nkit files into the source field, select "Convert to ISO" mode from the drop down, click Process. Close Nkit.

*Open WiiBackupManager_Win64 or WiiBackupManager_Win32 (probably the 64 one), click the "Files" tab if it's not already open, select "Add" > "Files", select your .iso that Nkit converted, click the checkbox for that file, click ""Transfer", select "WBFS File..", choose the location, click "OK".

If that doesn't work then I would go through and see what specific step the issue is occurring at, I think the first thing I would do is try a different Nkit file.

The NKit format could be great. And it would be great if it had come around a decade ago when people were still actively fundamentally hacking at the Wii and creating tools for it. But it's new and that's a problem. The NKit thing would be great if:
  • The WiiBackupManager source code was available (the dev is a complete ahole who left the community over a decade ago without leaving us the code that we could have fixed - and there are a number of bugs too - ourselves)
  • There was a CIOS patch to allow the format to work with USB loaders.

But there isn't and so yes, NKit it is a complete disaster on Wii. (You MUST use a not-too-friendly tool to convert to another format before you even think about using WiiBackupManager, which is confusing for newbies and a real time-waster in general.) I do like NKit for GameCube, but only in the format that Nintendont supports (yes, there's actually a "version" of the NKit for GameCube that doesn't work on Nintendont). None of this is the fault of the NKit dev, but it's a shame because the NKit format itself is superior to WBFS both in compression and reliability. It just doesn't work with real hardware (for Wii games) and is very, very unlikely to ever do so as there's no one around to make a new WiiBackupManager or write the need CIOS. So now we have a format the works great with GameCube on Wii, but not the original GameCube, and works great with Dolphin, but not on an actual Wii with Wii games.

Great.

Yeah, it's not a format that Wii games should be should be distributed in (hear that, Vimm?) until some of this is addressed. And it won't be.

Yeah, it would be great if a CIOS supported Nkit, but I guess I just don't find it that much of a hassle to convert, and find the Nkit program fairly user friendly, to be honest.

I don't see a better alternative for distributing Wii games, WBFS irreversibly disregards data from the disc, and 1:1 ISO images would have unnecessarily large filesizes.

I don't know if this will solve your problem but if you're converting the nkit.iso file to iso you will need the Wii Partition File Bundled with the Nkit program for it to convert Wii ROMs as Nkit also was built for Gamecube and the two are technically Different Programs.

in dolphin latest build you can run and even convert nkit files do iso, but those iso files crash the wii backup manager so it's useless for me.
