So I managed to fix this issue finally, Turns out that you need to connect the switch via USB in Tinfoil mode. Then double check Device Manager and look for "libUSBk Devices" tab, and expand it. Find Tinfoil Interface [1] and [0] or either, then right click it and press Uninstall, followed by the checkbox to delete the driver. Disconnect the switch and the USB then connect it back again and into Tinfoil mode. This time it should trigger a popup for "Switch" as media storage. If not then reinstall the libusbk driver specifically for Tinfoil Interface 0 ONLY.
It's almost a year but Thank you! This solved my problem.

My suggestion for everyone doing any mtp file transfer or install is to use DBI installer instead. It has an amazing mtp protocol feature allowing you can see all usable partions on your Switch and SD card. The best being the nand (emunand) and micro sd card install where you only need to select all the NSP/NSZ file you want to install and drag copy them to the location (either micro sd or emunand) and it will install them one by one. Fast and easy.

Just dragging a nsp file over to your sd card will install it!?

I gave DBI a try but I'm having some issues. It didn't seem to recognize when I ran dbibackend.exe, and now it doesn't even recognize that it's connected via USB cable. I would love a better solution for installing via MTP. Any idea how I can get help with this?

I don't use dbibackend.exe
Just download the nro and place it inside your SD:/switch/ folder
Open DBI and select Run MTP responder
On your PC you should be able to see a drive called Switch.
Open that drive and select Micro SD install folder
Drag your nsp/nsz files to that folder to install them

If your Switch is not detected on your PC, you may need to install the libusbk drivers.

Thanks for your help. I was able to get as far as dragging and dropping but I got a corrupted data error. Not sure why since it installs ok with Tinfoil.

EDIT: Turns out I had a defective SD card. Will try again with a new one.
