Hopefully they won't butcher Viking culture like they did ancient Greek culture.
For those who don't know, while Greece was a "democracy", only men had any kind of political or military power; women couldn't join in. Furthermore, there were no Africans, or people with African descent - the only skin colour was, well, "white". And homosexuality was unthinkable back then, too.
So Odyssey having brown and black mercenaries and citizens? Odyssey having female politicians, soldiers and mercenaries? The evil conspiracy training your thought-to-be deceased sister (if you're rightfully playing as the guy, Alexios) as a powerful soldier? An openly-gay guy inserting all kinds of innuendo into his speech? All bullshit, all historical revisionism, all disgusting to see in an "ancient Greece" game.
I just want to see ancient cultures represented faithfully, or as faithfully as possible while inserting the Apple of Enlightenment or whatever nonsense assassins and templars like to fight over. I don't give a single crap about "inclusivity" or "representation"; if it misconstrues what ancient cultures were like - warts and all - and leads to people being miseducated about said cultures, it should not exist.
Unfortunately I don't expect this one to be more realistic, in my opinion, Ubiquitous Software is full of racists and bigots at least in the power positions.
first off i'll say I'm not against actual diversity, and I'm not against it when it's forced, and hurts projects, the source etc.
Ubisoft has made a tyrannical SJW cult like toxic atmosphere where if you don't tow the line dont speak up because if you do never hope for full employee conversion.
if anything my time there made me racist because you never knew if that new annoying person was a diversity hire or if it was merit-based and if merit-based what happened to them.
A few years back they were pushing Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging.
being a D.I.B was a major push to managers and team leads at least the last few years it was mentioned at the CEO speech at the annual BBQ.
on the internal learning portal, there are diversity courses open to everyone but "strongly encouraged" to managers and team leads with the tacit threat of less advancement etc.
that was just what i was told when i was there i never was a team lead but a group of my co-workers did have an unofficial discord and we discussed this often one of the members was a team lead for the off hours crew of an unrelated project.
Outside of the now out of date inside baseball info I know first hand, I do know that with Odyssey it was developed with Alexios as the lead and near the last minute as far as development goes it was switched to Kassandra due to an overzealous creative manager on that project, they successfully petitioned to get the supplemental Novel to have her be the canonical character and earlier in the project they already got approval for allowing character selection via DNA corruption (which breaks lore in other supplemental material but why would they care
)
this is why later presentations pushed to the girl power with Kassandra, despite her playing exactly like Alexios as far as in-game interactions go.
personally i would have liked if she played like a woman of the time period so to overcome that you had to use subterfuge and other stealth actions to actually make her a unique character rather than a skin with a new voice for Alexios.
Of course if go to any UbiSoft/assassins creed forum (ResetEra, Reddit they will pooh-pooh this with the call BS or slander the poster with terms like misogynist, racist etc. and then fall back to the point that the one canonical choice the book ended up being Kassandra and since that wasnt player chosen it must be the true vision.
I rant all this because they took a franchise that I love and hurt the canon to do these pushes, they have also hurt most franchises at the company just in less noticeable ways.
But that's not what companies been doing for the last few years and I doubt it'll change.
Funny their idea of diversity is heavily left-leaning biases, having the same opinions at the detriment of ideas and merit and diverse melatonin or genitals prefered.
To me thats sexist racist etc. Either way happy left that company
Watched the trailer this morning, it highlighted some Viking ass Vikings.
that said if I had to make a prediction I imagine they'll play up shield-maidens kind of like how most Viking material the last few years in pop culture has (despite the lack of hard evidence it was common if you actually go look history)
I also wouldn't be surprised if some of your Viking brethren were more "swarthy" then Scandinavians actually are but I'm just basing those guesses from the last couple games and the changes I saw on other projects.
So far the people I know still working at the company haven't gotten back to me with anything internal on this game specifically.
