Update June 4: I have received some more info about the owner of the hacked island, his intensions are simply ill.

Hello community,

yesterday I visited another player's island and saw for the first time a bunch of 'unusual' items lying on the ground (after some googling, I know now they are hacked items).
I picked up five of them out of curiosity, but ever since then I haven't been able to get them out of my inventory. I have tried selling at Nook's Cranny, discarding in a trash bin, giving/sending to a villager, none worked. I also could not bury them on a mystery island.

Attached you can find three screenshots I took on the other player's island.
Left: Japanese text reads 'for demo - Nook's mile ticket'; Middle: Japanese text reads 'my own phone'.

Does anyone have a solution to this issue? I have a Switch Lite, and from what I've read so far, it cannot be hacked yet.
I am hoping for either 1) a way to forcefully clear my inventory or 2) somehow go back to my saved data two days earlier, before I picked up the items.

Any suggestions are welcome! Thank you in advance.

So it looks like the person who's island you visited generated items that have internal IDs but aren't actual items in game. I've done this myself in my own game and even though I couldn't interact with the item, I could still drop it, trash it, etc. It looks like he did more than just general the item, he messed with other values as well.

As reference the only items with Japanese characters that are actual unreleased items in game (i.e. safe) are:
"たぬきかいはつヘルメット" (Island Designer helmet)
"ひろばのベンチ" (community center bench)
"とたけけのスツール" (townhall stools)
"コミューン島専用柵" (Harv's fence)
"パニエルのせんたくおけ" (Harv's washtub)
"パニエルのものほしロープ" (Harv''s clothesline)
"パニエルのいしがま" (Harv's brick oven)

So if you notice items on the ground with characters that don't match what I listed, don't pick it up.

My advice would be to try filling your inventory and getting the dialog that asks you to drop something to make room and select the bugged item if you haven't tried that already. But if you've really tried everything with these items to get rid of them and they are stuck in your inventory the best solution I can give you, other than deleting your save, is make a new villager and play on that one or live with missing 5 inventory slots. I hate giving you bad news like this but encountering this problem is rare. The only way it can happen is if someone really goes out of their way to create a bugged item and even so, making these items on my own save like the one you have, I'm able to drop them and then use clean up to remove them so I don't know what else to tell you.

I have encountered items like OP where you can literally do nothing with, try giving yourself a デモ用たぬきマイルカード and see what OP is having problems with. When you select it, you aren't even given an option to drop it, it just says you can't use the item.

It's also rather disingenuous to say that those other items are "safe" because who knows what kind of punishment Nintendo may enact on people that have these items, even if they got them from someone totally unaware they were hacked. They're "safe" in the sense that you can place them and discard them, but they aren't safe to own on your save file that goes online to connect to other people because they are obviously hacked and not obtainable in any way.

Anyway, to OP, your options are limited. You either have to restart your save, create a second Islander to play on, or just deal with the 5 missing slots until Nintendo may or may not release a patch that clears the slots for you, as Doogie Boogie said.

You can also try sending in a report to Nintendo to see if they have any solutions for you, but you may be out of luck.

On Harv island, Wilbur could take some item and resend them by mail.
Or maybe try to put it on House storage.
Not verified if any of this solution is possible yet

Out of curiosity I injected this item into my inventory... There's literally nothing that you can do with it. Storing is impossible as you're given no option to interact with it, and it can't be gift wrapped either. Unfortunately I think the OP is stuck with this

I'd warn people of that island if you can remember its name.

Yeah but with CFW we're able to change items flag to be able to drop it or whatever we want..
This confort me to keep an hacked switch ^^

Hi Doogie Boogie, sorry for my late reply. Thank you very much for the information, I think I am really learning the lesson 'curiosity kills the cat' here. I will never ever pick up any suspicious items again...

I reported this problem including screenshots to Nintendo America, they said they had to escalate it to Administration and contact me again if there's a follow-up. I also wrote to Nintendo Japan, but the answer was just that they don't have a solution for modified items in the game, since they have no idea what had been done to those items.

It looks like we have the same item! I really hope that Nintendo will come up with a patch to automatically clear out any items that are undefined. I don't know how rare this problem is, if there aren't enough cases, guess it will not become a priority for the developers. As you can read from my reply just now, I already contacted Nintendo America and Japan. Unfortunately no solutions so far...

It was an online chat with Nintendo America, but all they said was they had to escalate this problem to Administration team.

You can find the answers from Nintendo Japan below.
In the first reply, they suggested me to sell or discard those items, and there's no specific solution possible.

I wrote back that I couldn't interact with the items at all, and sent links from google drive to the screenshots, but they said they were not allowed to open such attachments due to security reasons. And again, there is no solution to modified items.

Just curious, how did you inject the item into your inventory? By giving it the same name? Were you able to remove it with island editor or something? Sorry for noob questions.

Update: I came across the following list. I have no experience with the island editor tool whatsoever, is it possible that items which start with 'SequenceOnly' are items you can't interact with?

So if they cannot handle wrong item .. doubt they can ban anyone.
They should not be able to detect or alter anything in inventory.

You need a hacked Switch to inject and remove it. If your Switch isn't hackable then unfortunately you're stuck with less inventory space, unless you start over or play on another character. The island that you visited was definitely hacked, as there's no way to get the item otherwise.

The demo card sounds like it was made for testing purposes and should never have been released, so I don't know if Nintendo will patch it out, or if they're even able to.

If Nintendo removes those items completely from the game or sets their item IDs to redirect to a placeholder item that can be dropped, sold, etc then those items should vanish or be replaced.

Judging by the list, I suspect that items starting with 'SequenceOnly_' would have the same behaviour.

is it possible to drop any item in another persons town? specifically dropped fish/bugs as decoration

They could use telemetry to detect the "invalid" items and assume the player is cheating.

Of course that is PR suicide as the player could have visited a modded island unknowingly, picked up the item and found out they can't remove it.

Telemetry is not a "magic wand"
Lets talk about what is actually logged, nothing about items or where you get them..
The only real thing they can detect is "Why some one sell turnip to 800+ bells when max allowed is 660" cause Turnip Sell Price is logged.
They can eventually doubt about some items and how you get it with "Visit Other Island" Counter if it's still at 0.
But they didn't log about whats in your inventory, or event what you loot.

That's why they can't do anything.
They didn't monitor inventory.
This part is stay in local and is managed in local. In multiplayer you just "send" a specified item nothing more/nothing less, raw data.
They need to add a sanity check "in game" if this item is real/duped/hacked. but if game can handle it and even display it. atm we can confirm that Nintendo monitor nothing about this.

Bro, you should hide this information , they're "private" and in fact nothing is illegal here.. Now you just expose this guy to a ban for a hacked item.. but we're on a site for hacked switch/game/item
