Hey there,

About 5 years ago I modded my Wii with Homebrew/USB Loader. I'm trying to retrace my steps with what I actually installed. I know I do not have Bootmii/boot2 installed due to my Wii's version. I do not know if I have bootIOS installed. I ran the syscheck and these are the results:

did you mean Bootmii 'as IOS'?
that would be in slot 254 (looks okay above)
to be certain you could re-run hackmii, it wont cause any problem
BootIOS was a homebrew app which simply booted the above useful to access sneek from hbc)

Thank you for the reply.

Yes I mean IOS. I'm a fish out of water trying to figure what I did so long ago. When I load Hackmii from HBC it tells me boot2 is unable to be installed. After that I get two options. To install bootIOS AND to uninstall bootIOS. This has me confused. To note: I cannot run Bootmii from HBC and I'm assuming because I don't have Bootmii on a SD card...maybe?

I was under the assumption that bootmii was needed for HBC and therefore a USB loader. Maybe I'm misunderstanding? I do have a backup NAND on my laptop which leads me to believe I did something with Bootmii

You are correct, bootmii needs to be on the SD card in order to launch bootmii. If you run the hackmii installer and choose prepare sd card it will save the necessary files to SD for you.

If ever uncertain about your configuration use ModMii to resoftmod your wii, it will ensure optimal configuration

yeah, you dont have a vulnerable boot2 (really old wii's) so you can only install Bootmii as IOS.
the option to 'uninstall' backs up the fact that it is already in there :)

Bootmii is NOT required for homebrew channel - but always strongly advised to help with brick recovery.

You can always just run Modmii

answer as if you were starting afresh and you cant really go far wrong

Thank you both. If I prepare my SD will it reformat the drive and delete what's on there? I have my USB loader on there and I honestly don't remember where and how I installed it and don't want to lose it. Yes it's odd. If the option to uninstall is there why would there be an option to install if it's already installed? Hmm. Also, isn't Priiloader needed to install bootIOS? I don't believe I have that...

If BootmiiIOS needs to be run via SD how would I initiate a brick recovery if the system is bricked? My Wii starts to the Wii menu and not BootmiiIOS. Is there a need for bootIOS if I'm only loading Wii games via USB?

I'm not too worried about a brick situation as I'm not installing anything else on the Wii. Only using it for my Wii games. I'm more just trying to understand what I had done to it 5 years ago. Retracing my steps.

I'm just confused by BootIOS and how it needs a SD card to run. If I had done something to brick my Wii what would be the point of BootIOS being run from a SD card if I bricked the Wii. Is BootIOS supposed to run on bootup?

After some research I may have figured it out.

BootIOS needs to run from a SD. I installed Priiloader in case of a non-system menu brick which I can use at start-up and load Bootmii and therefore install my backup NAND.

It's still confusing to me what BootIOS and Priiloader would be needed for backing up, though. If Priiloader is still part of the SM boot then any brick not relating to the SM I could simply run SM through HBC via the SM/regular boot...yes?

Yes - I do have that thankfully. I was just thinking though, say I brick it the worst way possible where SM doesn't load (I won't as I'm not modding it further than a USB loader) how will Priiloader be effective if Priiloader loads WITH SM and not before as BootMii/boot2 does?

let me also note that the SD must be a SDHC (32GB) and below whether its micro SD or not.

If you don't have bootmii as boot2 and something goes wrong with the system menu or system menu IOS, you won't be able to access priiloader and recover UNLESS you have a hardware flasher like an infectus modchip capable of restoring a nand backup to the chip. If you at least have the keys you can create a new virgin nand dump to restore.

Generally speaking, if u can't fix it with software alone, hardware like an infectus is as expensive or more expensive than just buying another used console. Not to mention the skills required to pull off a complicated repair would be challenging for even me and I consider myself pretty up there in terms of wii knowledge.

Got it!

Lastly, in Priiloader I enabled the "hack" to disable automatic updates. Do I have to run Priiloader at start-up to stop any automatic updates or does Priiloader run in the back ground?

I've learned a lot from this thread already. So far my Wii is great and doing what I want it to do. If I do more I will for sure checkout ModMii. Cool to see people contribute to the community.
