After public outcry, 505 Games promises to fix performance issues for Bloodstained on Switch

header.jpg

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night released on June 18th to massive critical reception, becoming one of the highest-scored games of the year on OpenCritic. A few days later, on June 25th, the slightly delayed Nintendo Switch version of the game launched, to far less praise. Rampant framerate problems and crashes happened to plague the Switch release, to which the development team released a version 1.01 patch to fix certain issues. Sadly, the patch didn't seem to resolve the fluctuating framerate or even the random crashes. After concerns began to flood the internet, publisher 505 Games announced that they would be putting all their focus into fixing major issues for Bloodstained on the Switch, in order to allow the game to be enjoyable regardless of platform. Smaller patches will be distributed throughout the coming days, to try to increase game performance as soon as possible, so that players don't have to wait for one large patch that addresses every problem.

I want to play this on the switch, is all these problems with the game, how bad is it really, I read a post here I that items get stuck and can’t be picked up. I’m more of a console person, is the game really not that playable in certain areas. Right now it seems I’ll be waiting for an update.

The Switch version is my only exposure to Bloodstained and it legitimately feels like a Mighty No. 9-tier game, just minus the broken online mode, crouch dashing, Wii U port, extra Kickstarters, and Keiji Inafune's misplaced confidence in adaptations and sequels. Apparently the game is actually excellent but it's hard to feel that way when this port is barely playable.

The loot bug seems to be in all versions.

It depends on how much you like Igavania games I guess. Im a huge Bethesda fan and I can put up with all the shit in Elder Scrolls/Fallout and still really enjoy the games.

Also I really think the enemy/boss designs and graphics in general are crap...and I doubt that stuff will change with patches.

Was to posting something similar, I saw people mentioning the game dropping to 5 fps in some places and I yet have to find those spots, the framerate is pretty stable for me tbh, only have problems with some random micro stutter and that’s about it, there’s a minimal input lag yes, but nothing to the unplayable level.

Played it for hours and haven't had a single problem yet. Could it be better optimized for the switch? Absolutely. Could the game design and art have been better? Sure. Is it still fun and playable? I think so.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell everybody else like you. You don't notice them, because you're used to lackluster and broken ports. You've accepted it (subconsciously) and are okay with the glaring imperfections that everybody else points out.

Because it doesnt break the game for me. Ive been playing video games for 30 years on almost every platform that has existed, I honestly dont give a shit what framerate a game plays at or its resolution. If its fun, ill play it. And this game, to me, is fun enough for me not to care.

It's weird when it's the reverse of the norm. Usually PC players are shafted.
PC does get bad ports sometimes, but when they do it right its fantastic. Like running any of the far cry games at ultra + 144 fps. I am not a PC master race guy, but just saying it is fantastic lol.

Edit: Plus the PC benefits sometimes form being over powered (if you have a good PC), to makeup for any/all performance issues, at least on some games.

Question: How is a 2D platformer so taxing on the Switch’s hardware? This isn’t DOOM, Wolfenstein 2 or the Witcher 3, or even Unravel Two. This isn’t a game that occurs in 3D space or has these extravagant scenes it has to render with an intense depth-of-field effect. This is a simple 2D platformer that has a very simplistic art style with probably less than a million polygons to render. Why is the Switch struggling to run this game?

Part of it is incompetence, but the fact that it's a sidescroller doesn't say anything about how much geometry a game uses. Bloodstained is drawing 2.5 million vertices in the tower exterior according to reshade, which is not a lot compared to other modern games, but unless my math is way off it's more than a million polygons. It's also UE4, which has a pretty high minimum spec requirement all things considered.

hi all, after I "finally" got my copy of the game for switch, started the game after updating to patch 1.0 and I have this to say from my playthorugh so far:

- From start to the end of my 4 hours playing,
- I Had no issues on switch,
- maybe some slight lag at times, but it didn't bother me from stop playing or halt my enjoyment of the game.
- no freezes, or crashes, no chest bug.
- the transition between rooms and the jumping up to higher rooms, I had no lags there.
- the graphics were fine with me, even the darker areas (those looked perfectly fine with me no issues).
- I saved almost alot.
- no imputes lag, Miriam was fully responsive, when I pressed A,B,Y,X,L,R, ZL,ZR etc, all buttons and input was perfect, no issues.

and all this I enjoyed sololy in handheld mode for 4 hours :) .

I see no issues with it currently, had none ATM, ether I got super lucky on my copy or I dunno.
maybe im not yet at the bug/crash part.

I'm currently passed the 1st castle boss, and did a few quests too.

tho, I few patches for switch wouldn't be bad, not sure if the game later on gets crash/glicthy.

im really enjoying my experience with Blood: ROTN on switch, and it's a good experience,
or maybe I was so eager to play this, that the issues don't bother me, well I haven't had any of them that others may have had.

also, to leave a comment on the Kickstarter page, do you need to be a member?

im looking forward to the DLC stuff (free updates) coming after the switch fixes? in free version updates like
HAL did with Kirby Star Ailles?

You haven't really gotten far enough for the majority of the performance issues, bugs or crashes. If you're on on 1.01, you don't even have to worry about the chest bug. The water glitch is farther in the game, the bookshelf crash is very rare, and the majority of the "unplayable" framerates are on the tower and in some later more spoilery locations. I'v crashed 4 times in the twelve hours i played, two of which were a few seconds after beating a boss.

That only happens when you update an existing save. You also likely haven't encountered the progression items effected yet. I found another bug with the game (didn't see it mentioned). sometimes when you get hit by something, the controller will vibrate (as it should), but it doesn't stop vibrating until you get to a save point to heal. this happened to me several times before the first boss.

hmm, I see thanx for the tips,
um after playing a bit more on bloodstained, I'm at the point past the tower, and I stumbled by accident on one of the endings yesterday,
and I got no issues/frezzes or such in the game.
the team on Kickstarter said that the switch patch will come out with the IGA dlc around the week of 15th July, (next week).
im really looking forward to playing as Zangestu in bloodstained, and the 3rd "mystery playable charater.

lol, I haven't had this issue in my game, maybe cause I had turned off "HD rumble" option?

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.

Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol

I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
