It would seem there are no squares around the ducks either for whatever reason.
clean the zapper and reciever with all purpose cleaner for better infrared, make sure it's an old style tv you use (LED/LCD/plasma won't work, only tube tv's work).
make sure the wires are in good condition, and don't forget to plug them in side A (player one)

Hi thanks for the response,
It's a CRT, Did you watch the video?
Cleaned the zapper, no luck, Wires are as good as new.
Putting the controller in Port one leaves it uncontrollable if you didn't know. (Don't know if that's the case for every edition of duck hunt, but it seems to be the case for duckhunt/mario edition)
Again, Worked earlier today..

blow the cart, thats the solution for 100% of NES issues

(inb4 the obligatory "saliva will melt the game into oblivion".....yeah, i don't really care)
Wasn't blowing only done if the card wasn't read?
A certain chip in there likes to be annoying which causes the game not to boot,
In other words, Blowing into it does nothing. If the check chip says it's invalid, It won't start.
Tried it nontheless, But no luck..

yeah it was actually mostly just a joke, but games can boot if the contacts on the cart are dirty, just as long as the CIC chip is read ok, this can lead to a few different issues, garbled graphics etc....it might be possible that part of the cart wasn't being read properly causing the overlay layer not to appear (the white square around the duck during the flash) but usually if the graphics aren't being read properly its very obvious as all the graphics appear scrambled not just one element
