Hello, I have a right joycon modified to work as a jig, and I heard that updating it will make it stop working.

I would like to know if there's a way to disable the controller update request. Thanks for your attention!

There is only one kind of joycon mod that makes it "unsusable" after the update, that would be making a permanent conection of the pins 9 and 10, usually it's done by soldering a wire or some resistor.
If that is your mod, after the update you will need to remove the baterry of your joycon and plug it again (just a reset), and it will come back to life. After that its recomended that you turn on your switch without the joycon connected to it(unless you are booting into RCM)

If your kind of mod isn't permanent like that you are safe to update.
I have a reedswitch on pins 1 and 10( for jig purposes) and my joycon firmware is uptodate and working 100%.

Hi there, thanks for answering! In my case I have a permanent mod (for jig purposes) probably on pins 9 and 10. Is there a way to change the pins soldering? Or if isn't which is the best solution? Thanks for your attention ^^

As long you don't do the controller update manually you should be fine.

Supposedly it only happens during firmware update. So if you have your JoyCon connected over BT when you do the update, it should be fine.
I still recommend removing the mod, or at least changing it out for something like this: https://gbatemp.net/threads/joycon-mod-using-eject-button-as-switch.508772/
We know Nintendo can detect the permanently bridged pins, and there's not much benefit to using it over something like this, which is very simple to do.

Totally agreed. Although, there's a risk of pressing the button and update it everytime you start the console or leave the sleep mode.

Joycon update is seperate than regular system update, use 90DNS if you are worried about updates.

I'm talking about the right joycon update. It asks me to update the controller every single time i start the console or leave the sleep mode, as mentioned ;/

Try 90DNS and see if it still prompt you.

Unfortunately it's nothing related to the internet. I've been using airplane mode since CFW 5.1.0

If you accidentally turn off wifi, it will do the update check. If you are able to do a joycon mod, why not solder a mod chip?

If you have some skill with the soldering iron it's really easy and fast to remove the bridge between pin's 9 and 10.
Just open the controller(4 Y screws) and disconnect the ribbon cable that goes from the rail to the circuit board (to prevent any damage to the board) then remove the extra stuff that is soldered there.
If you go that far I recommend that you connect a Reed switch (or a regular one, if you don't mind making small a hole in the back of the joycon), or making the eject button mod. I like the reed because the modded joycon will look as a regular one and it's pretty easy to do it and when you put a magnet close to the reed the joycon will became a jig.

Joycon updates are the only updates not downloaded from the internet but are packaged with the firmware files.

Mine was seemingly useless after the update... permanent mod with pin 9 and 10, I just docked the switch after the update and it worked, without the need to open the joycon

I meaaaan, A while back someone updated their joycon with a perma mod and I had him flash one of my old joycon backups after changing the serial number to his and "downgraded it". The version stays the same but all of the settings get set back to the past update and his joycon was "updated" and worked with the solder mod.

After the update you just need to reboot the joycon, but the permanent bridge on pins 9 and 10 for some reason don't let it reboot.
Looks like updating it via bluetooth is one way to bypass this issue.
I think that in your case the joycon might have run out of battery and when you docked the switch it rebooted.

Supposedly if you update over bluetooth there's no issue. Guess it only checks if the JoyCon is modded during the update and if nothing is connected to the Switch it can't check.
