Project Sakura Wars announced for the West in 2020

One of SEGA's greatest franchises is set to take the West by storm when Project Sakura Wars (working title) launches for PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe in Spring 2020! A cultural phenomenon in Japan, the long-running series defined the JRPG/romance genre with its memorable characters, masterful writing, and sublime music. Now, a completely new entry is set to grace our shores.

The stage is set in a romanticized version of 1940s Imperial Tokyo. 10 years ago, a cataclysm resulted in the devastating loss of the Imperial Combat Revue of Tokyo, the capital's global defense force operating out of the Imperial Theater. The theater has since fallen on hard times and risks closure. As captain of the new Tokyo revue, it's up to you to mend the hearts of your troops and restore the Imperial Theater back to its former glory!

With its strong emphasis on character-driven storytelling and relationship building, fans will find plenty to love with Project Sakura Wars! Get your first look at the game by watching the announcement trailer:

  • The Most Immersive Story Yet--During your adventure, you will be able to interact with a colorful cast of characters through the dynamic LIPS dialogue system, where what you say and how you say it has a profound impact on these relationships both off and on the battlefield.
  • A Rewarding Battle System--Armed with powerful mechs known as "spiricle armor," the gameplay is augmented by a deep and robust combat system that takes full advantage of each squad member's unique abilities.
  • An Eye-catching Anime Production--Complete with gorgeous animated sequences and dramatic character arcs, the story will leave you hungry for what happens next.
Project Sakura Wars will feature Japanese voice acting with subtitles in English, German, French, and Spanish.

I have to ask, is this post copy pasted from press material or something? Either way, I've heard of this series, though I know practically nothing about it beyond it being a classic. Great news for fans of the series, I guess, though I'm not sure how well it ever did outside Japan.

so it's a new story? I never played previous games, maybe it's not required.
we recognize tite kubo's vibe for chara design (bleach).
The town looks nice.

I hope they understand that the setup is located in japan, and they have to keep the japanese names. translation and not localization !
Localization for a japanese historic stage is always bad (like not translating sake to cider, or keeping dono/sama/last names instead of m'am and mister and first names, or reversing first/last names, etc.). I wish games had the option to keep honorifics or not. honorifics are very important in this kind of relationship stories.
think I'm a weeb? that's a weeb game.

it's from Sega Saturn (1996, Sakura Taisen), then dreamcast.
it was popular when it was released, if you were a sega fan, but these consoles and the fact the game was only japanese is probably why you never heard of it.

first official US/EU release was in 2010 on Wii (remake of PS2 game from 2005).
there are lot of derivative games on many consoles too (NDS, gameboy, etc.)

Script is nearing completion, and editing is ramping up.
If you were to put a Masami Eiri plush to my head and ask me which project is closest to completion, this would be it.

Sounds intriguing.

Gotta admit.. the PS4 is probably the only console I bought that I'd be interested in keeping.

Wii, Wii U all were sold, this baby however, has games coming for it left and right. Neat.

It's finally here... *insert It's been 3000 years-meme*.

Tite Kubo leading this is fascinating, but at least the production value on this one looks quite competent enough. Hopefully it'll be a hit as it can be.
