How long have you used your current phone for and why?

I still use an iPhone 6s. I bought it on sale in late 2016, shortly after the iPhone 7 came out. I've used it for just over two years.

It's a piece of shit by today's standards. It's the shitty 16 GB model, the camera isn't great, the screen is cracked and a bit small and newer phones feel so much nicer (for a few days). Given how much a new phone costs I'll keep using this piece of shit because it still does everything I need it to do. It can run the apps I need it to (FaceBook, WeChat, Anki, various dictionaries, etc.), the camera is still good enough and it still has the fucking headphone jack.

I'm not trying to call anyone an idiot if their phone is better than mine, I'm curious to know why you decided to upgrade.

I have a Motorola G4+ that my friend gave me because mine randomly stopped getting signal a few months ago. I generally don't upgrade, phones just seem like they cost waaaaay too much for what they are. I wait for things to eventually fail and hope I can find something on the cheap lol

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Since release date... was it 3 years ago?

Why? The stubborn phone just won't die already, it keeps working better than expected. I really wanted to get a Pixel 3 for the camera but I can't justify myself changing the phone when the damn old phone works flawlessly... damn the not so well planned obsolescence /s.

It won't even crack, and I am dropping it a lot lately (perhaps not by accident). It doesn't even have scratches, what's wrong with this phone!
The awful fingerprint sensor has lost some color in the lower edge, though.

PS: long life to consumerism??? (hell no!)
I just won't get a new phone unless the old one doesn't work right... or if I happen to find someone that wants the old one as a gift.

One plus 3, About two and half years ago, I guess the reason I still use it because it fucking get Android Oreo update and it was a budget phone that can do everything that a $1000 dollars phone out there can do.

I generally tend to upgrade about every 2-3 years or so, though kinda less by choice and more by circumstance.

I've had my Galaxy S8 since release date, which was April 21st 2017, so I guess just a tiny bit under 2 years. I don't tend to upgrade phones unless I absolutely have to, only really switched from my old Note Edge to my S8 because it was basically free at the time and the upgrade I had pending for two years was about to expire. Before my Note Edge, I had an S4, which I only swapped from because my S4 died on me.

I have no plans to upgrade my S8 at the moment, not unless I get another major phone for near free or this one happens to break.

I just got my note 9 a couple of weeks ago. Only had the razer phone for a year before it went to shit so I had to upgrade.
Good phone especially if you're into the modding scene. You have to wait a week after setup to unlock the bootloader though. An annoying new feature by Samsung I guess

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to a Note 8 from Note 4 after 4 years. The Note 4 had wifi disconnect issues and AT&T has a shitty signal in my area. It was a Verizon phone flashed with a custom rom to run on most any carrier, but that seemed to add to the signal problem and it finally got bad/annoying enough to make me upgrade.

Galaxy S7 - Why? There's an unofficial fork of LineageOS which is based on Android Pi, this phone's amazing without all the bloatware Samsung gives and the battery life is very great too since I've underclocked the CPU.
I use my camera really rarely so I don't find a reason to buy a newer phone tbh.

I'll keep me phone till I can extend me operator contract and pick a new phone.

My current phone is a Samsung Galaxy J7 Prex on Boost and I have been using it since July of 2018. Why? Because it was a cheap phone with an Octo-core CPU and I could afford it at the time, but now I am still using it because I can't afford a better phone.

Still using my galaxy S4 from 6 years ago. No issues. I did replace my battery a few months ago for 20 dollars and a lifetime warranty. So im good for at least 6 more years.

My last phone was a Motorola X Play that I got around May 2016. I lasted it until October 2017 because the USB port was a tiny little shit that died from usage wear. Eventually I was unable to use it anymore despite the fact that there was nothing wrong with it, and due to my specific anger burst over bullshit, one of the days I was fighting to get it to charge for a minute pissed me off enough to throw it at the brick wall in my living room.
The phone didn't like it.

I went out the same day get a new one, and since I was on contract deal I got a better, newer one (LG Stylo 3 Plus) that has served me well since then, and still works great.

I know here in the UK even more recent model than the S4 does not support certain apps.
Does whatsapp even work anymore?

Galaxy S7 Edge, I've bought it used around 2 years ago. It has some small defects (some bumps around the metal frame, two barely visible scratches on the glass that were already there when I got it and a small dark patch on the screen after a particularly hard drop) but it's still functionally fine and it holds very well for a 3 year old model, plus it has everything I'd want from a smartphone and no notch + a headphone jack are definitely a plus.

I've considered getting a new one sometime in the future but this one will definitely not go for sale or in e-waste scrap heap, I'll either hand it down to someone or keep it as a backup. Hell, I'd even just repair it and keep it if it wasn't that a new glass + screen cost around 200 Eur here (which is basically as much as what an used as new S7E goes for where I live) so even DIY repairs aren't worth it unless replacement parts' prices go down.

I'm still using an iPhone 6S. Since I keep it in an OtterBox case 24/7, the phone itself is in essentially pristine condition (though the case is pretty beat up, but damn they can take a pounding). My only issue is the battery life, which only lasts for about 3-5 hours even though I keep it on Low Power Mode 24/7. That means I have to have my charger on me all the time, or power it off every time I'm not using it (which is extremely inconvenient since it take 30 seconds to boot).

But, I know for sure I will never switch unless I have to (and if I do it'll be to some sort of Android). That's because it has a headphone jack, which is extremely important to me, since the idea of having to charge headphones is a rather horrible thought. I'm sure most of GBATemp can concur. That and I HATE how the Home button feels on the iPhone 7/8.

Everything works. people having trouble with certain apps is not due to the age of the phone and more to do with whether or not they have rooted their phone.

LG G5. A 2016 flagship that flopped due to its modular design, so its price plummeted. Surprisingly high-specced for the price though; 4GB RAM, Snapdragon 820, 1440p screen, dual cameras for £120. So while I haven't had it for long (nearly 2 years), I'm sure I'll keep it for much longer as it seems to be fairly futureproof.

My requirements are:

Unlocked bootloader and a stock Android rom with root
Headphone jack
Stereo speakers
MicroSD slot

I used an HTC One M8 for about 6 years. Well, more specifically, I used 4 of them over that timeframe because HTC has bad build quality and the battery doesn't last more than 1-2 years and can't be replaced. Despite it's aging specs, you can do a lot with Greenify and a debloated rom. Each replacement phone costed less, so all of them combined costed less than an iPhone X

Since last June, I've been using an international Galaxy S9 since the USA version can't be rooted and the S9 is the first phone since 2012 that meets all of my criteria. I have to make my calls over VOIP though since the international version is missing the 3G frequency band in my area and you can't make normal calls over 4G for some arbitrary reason decided by the carriers. Apparently, maintaining a 56k connection on 4g networks with 100+ megabit maximum speeds is too hard for AT&T to do without a third party app that uses data.

It's sad that every year phones cost more, do less, and are harder and harder to control what runs on them. A headphone jack wasn't even a requirement a few years ago, but now it limits me to only a few phone models. Want admin access to devices you "own"? That limits you even more. I'll probably run various S9s for the next 6 years, especially if Samsung loses the headphone jack too.

I've gifted me old S4 to a mate of mine, put Android 6 orso on it.
According to her, banking apps n what not still work w/o problems.
