Like everyone is saying, get a VPN. I highly recommend a paid VPN. I pay something like $40 a year for PIA. doesn't matter what server i connect to, in what country, It's very fast, and they also provide server side ad blocking.

The way they catch you downloading a torrent is like this. a company like Nintendo hires a company that provides a service protecting their content. said company will find torrents with their content. they will download it and then allow themselves to become part of the upload pool. when you go to download that content via a torrent you complete a so called handshake with the uploaders. during this handshake you exchange information needed to complete the P2P connection. among this information is each others IP address. they will lay low for a week or two then they will send out notices to the ISPs of each IP who downloaded the torrent. The ISPs have to at least show that they sent you a letter in case the content provider tries to take them to court saying that they allow their customers to pirate software.

The way a VPN works is that when you send information to a website your pc first encrypts the info and then sends it to the VPN server. that server then dencrypt it and sends it to the website server. then that website sends the info to the VPN server, who then encrypts it, and sends it to your pc. then your pc decrypts it. so whether its someone streaming a torrent to you, or a website, the only IP they ever see is the IP of the VPN. that's why its important to use a VPN that doesn't keep logs. That almost always means getting a paid VPN.

You are somewhat right. The problem with torrents is not that you are downloading, the problem is you are uploading, sharing copyright content, contributing to piracy. Also, you can vouch for vpn all you want, but they are not secure and if your isp really wants to monitor your traffic they can, its just an extra step for them. Not to mention that vpn companies can not be trusted, not in the least. They are known to sell private information. Even is they say they do not keep logs, that is not something that can be trusted because many vpn companies have been caught selling information. Same thing can be said about streaming apps, they do in fact log every piece of information they can, then they sell it.

Yeah, I remember there was some stuff back in the edonkey days. It's a concern if this is a common thing in the States though as we could inevitably follow the same path.
I don't know. While the US does seem to like to try take the results of its legal system on tour I also find most places laugh it off in the end. Not that there is a lack of home grown nonsense.

While I agree that a VPN is potentially a service you tie to yourself with a credit/debit card (I think some take crypto currencies and other potentially anonymous methods these days), and often are run by shady people*, I don't see how ISPs can snoop on an even vaguely well set up service, outside of them owning (in either sense of the term) the service too.

I don't want to get into an arguing match with you, but an ISP cannot "snoop" on an encrypted VPN. we hear all the time in the news when the FBI, or CIA seeks to get a warrant on a VPN in order to see a persons browsing history. So, if the US government cannot decrypt a VPN using AES, Advanced Encryption Standard, How can an ISP do it? Like I said, im not trying to argue with you, and Im not trying to say anyone here doesn't know what they are talking about, but to be fair, I work in this field. Its how I have put food on the table for more than a few years now. So, if you are still going to say that an ISP can snoop on an encrypted stream you are going to have to link a source or two describing how this is possible. The reason I said to get a known paid VPN like the one I use, PIA, is because they take anonymous forms of payment, and are monitored by a third party, like most other VPNs to make sure they don't keep logs. So you can say what you will, but unless you can post links to credible sources you need to say that its your opinion. It doesn't help anyone to just speculate on something serious like this.
I copied and pasted "Advanced Encryption Standard" and it changed my font. I didn't realize until after typing the rest and don't feel like going back and changing it.

Nord is my go to. Tried Express, PIA, Vypr, HMA and a whole slew of other "highly recommended" services.. Only to go back to Nord for its simplicity and legitimate no-log policy.

I hear this exact same statement every week. sometimes several times a week. Most of the time they are lucky to just receive a warning letter. Other times they are facing criminal charges, and are selling cars , and properties to pay for legal services. most are not willing to use a VPN like you until its too late. Like I tell people, A free VPN Is far better than no VPN. Just make sure whatever VPN you do use at least has a kill switch. The rest of the features we have all brought up are nice, but a kill switch is a must.

even then are you 100% sure your safe?

with a vpn? pretty much. I did alot of research with my vpn as far as what to pick, and pretty much, if its free, its a crapshoot, if you pay, you should be safe. My VPN claims that they dont record anything you do so if it ever came to it, they would hand my ISP blank drives. Now if this is true, bravo to them and cudos for me, if it isnt, lets just say the amount of money ill make from suing them should make the big bad nintendo go away.

honestly wouldnt worry about it to much tbh. i feel like they do this every once in a while just to discourage people from pirating. The USA does not have the infrastructure or means to catch every pirate and frankly because of things like vpns, its a waste of time. I was around during the megaupload days, and i can tell you that when it got it, piracy was dead, but years later here we are.

When you say kill switch, what exactly do you mean? Just like a disconnect button? I'm using IPVanish and wanna make sure I'm covered.

I don't. It's pretty standard stuff, and you have to admit that there is a relatively large amount of piracy happening on the switch.
i mean nintendo stalking people's internet history is very sketchy, your ISP stalking your history is very normal.
also does nintendo really think they can stop piracy? pfft

Some VPN's have an option to terminate internet access if you get disconnected from the vpn.

I think it's much more important for them to show a strong stance against piracy rather than them thinking they can stop it. The Nintendo switch has been massively successful and piracy is always small when taking a look outside of places like this.

Like I explained before, Nintendo doesn't "stalk" your browsing history. neither does your ISP. They only know when you are using P2P software, and you make a handshake connection to download and upload a torrent with their content. It's not like they are watching what you're doing. ISPs do not spend money on a department that watches their clients browsing habits. they send you a letter after someone like nintendo asks them to.

Step 1: Get a good Seedbox (i recomend seedboxes.cc, even comes with different VPNs)
Step 2: Get invited into a closed tracker
Step 3: Download a few new games to push your ratio on the site (most invite only sites kick inactive users / leechers)
Step 4: Never worry again about infected NSPs or Nintendo shutting down your "resources" or suing you over a few downloads

I recommend never touching any torrent that has anything to do with any bethesda or zenimax media content. I got a infringement email for torrenting a skyrim patch that was like 9MB.

Seeding makes you more vulnerable I thought.

I still for the life of me don't get why private trackers are useful or safer in any way. You give them far more personal information for the sake of this "privacy" and most of them really don't have much more content than public trackers (and most of it is indexed on DHT anyways, you just have to know how to scrape)

Aside from that, having to seed at all is a negative in my book, since rather than consuming content you're now providing it. One causes far more damage if you get taken to court.
