Greetings crew!

Once a long long time ago I homebrewed my wii (circa 2011? maybe?) Yesterday I decided to connect my Wii to the internet in order to use Netflix. Ever since this moment in time whenever I load up USB Loader GX it opens up with just the regular white screen without any buttons or games. This has never been an issue before. I scoured the internet looking for fixes and decided to try redownloading USB Loader GX but that did not work. I also tried cfg loader v70 as well. No clue what the deal is. Using other usb loaders shows that I just don't have any games. This is, of course, not the issue because I have not damaged my hard drive and it is working correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

Howdy! Simple stuff first:

1) Is the drive plugged in? :)
Seriously, is it plugged into the correct port? It should be the port closest to the bottom of the Wii if it's laying horizontal.

2) Are the game files still on the hard drive? Can you see them on your computer (on a PC either through Explorer if the drive is FAT32/NTFS, or through WiiBackup Manager if the drive is formatted WBFS)?

3) Did you update your Wii through Nintendo's servers when you pulled it out of retirement? If so, you may need to reinstall the homebrew channel. The latest version (4.3x) was released in 2010, but your Wii may not have been up-to-date in 2011 (you might have used an exploit dependent on an older version of the System Menu).

Given it's all of the USB loaders giving you an issue, my guess is something with the your drive or the files themselves. Hopefully it's something simple!

Hello,

as you mentioned downloading a new app, I guess it's possible the console updated some titles related to the USBLoader.
Though, I'm not sure how it would react if you try to launch the loader with the files Nintendo replaced.

I will first assume it's this issue, and you need to reinstall the file required by that loader.
Though, the loader should still display your games, even with the wrong file installed.

so we will try different things.

First, Is netflix working correctly ?
as we should first be sure it's correctly installed so you don't need eShop anymore or the same thing could happen again.

1. try netflix, be sure it works.

2. reinstall a custom IOS (system file)
This step is maybe optional, but no harm doing it. at best it will update the file, at worse it will make you lose 5 min of your time.

- Download this "d2x cIOS installer for Wii"
- Create a folder in SD:/apps/ named "d2x_installer"
- extract the downloaded zip in that folder

You should have this :

SD:/apps/d2x_installer/boot.dol
SD:/apps/d2x_installer/meta.xml
SD:/apps/d2x_installer/icon.png
SD:/apps/d2x_installer/ciosmaps.xml
SD:/apps/d2x_installer/7/
SD:/apps/d2x_installer/8/
SD:/apps/d2x_installer/10/

- put the SD in your console, go to homebrew channel and launch the d2x installer.
- Press A to go to the selection screen, and select this (with D-pad up/down/left/right) :

What : d2x v8 final
where : slot 249
base : IOS 57
version : 21008 (or if you want to prevent nintendo replacing it again, you can select 65535 as version)

-Press A to install from the network
- after installation press Home to exit.
it should now work again.
If not, then it's another issue. you just installed a good file so no worry about that, you didn't break anything, on the contrary.

3. you said other loaders have the same problem, it's not loading your games.
it's like the loaders are not seeing your drives.

So, like 1) and 2) from Azzarod's message above:
Are you connecting it in the right port?
On Wii, it should be connected on the bottom USB port 0. (the one near the edge).

Did you try to reset the loader's settings? (or maybe you completely reinstalled a fresh loader's version, without old settings)
If you have old settings, it's possible they are conflicting and it's trying to load the USB from the other port, or from a different partition.
If you didn't, reset your settings. If you want you can keep the files are backup (GXGlobal.cfg and all the .bin and xml files from usbloader_gx folder)

4. It could be a common issue with HDD detection on newer version of the loaders :

To check if the HDD is detected correctly :
USBLoaderGX > Settings > HDD menu > Click on the first option, it will force a HDD detection and will cycle through all your partition every time you click it again.

So, here you can have two possibilities :
A - HDD not detected
or
B - HDD detected, partition selected, but still no games displayed.

A :
If the HDD is fine, and plugged in correct USB Port but still can initialize the drive:
Go to settings > loader settings > Loader's IOS : set the value to 58.
exit the loader and try booting it again.
using 58 usually fix the HDD detection problem.

B :
If the HDD is detected, and the partition where you have your games is correctly selected, be sure "Display wii games" is enabled to display wii games from that selected partition :
Main screen > top menu > 4th icon > select Wii games.

If it's selected, and still no games found :

did you put your HDD on PC to check if it's working and your games are there?
if it's FAT32 it's fine.
If it's WBFS partition, please do not use "WBFS Manager" but "Wii backup Manager" instead which also work with FAT32. the former is corrupting games.

Let us know if it helps :)

Azzarod:
1) Yes, it is!
2) Yes to both, I can see them just fine.
3) I didn't update anything. When I connected to the internet it asked if I would like to install an update and I selected 'no'. I also already had Netflix on my Wii so I did not need to install that either.

Cyan:
1) It did work when I tried
2) I am now in college and am currently not connected to the internet (I can get the campus to give me access), I tried installing it without internet but it seems this is net dependent.
3) I deleted everything usb loader gx related and just installed it fresh on my drive. Not 100% positive I did this correctly, would love some pointers on how to do this so I could try again.
4) I can't do this because literally nothing shows up on Usb Loader GX (this is the issue) I have provided an image below:

So it's getting past the initialization screen and stopping while it's reading the game list. After the background is drawn and before the game list is visible it scans for Wii titles, then GC, then NAND folders.

What happens if you have no games on the hdd at all? Try renaming the games, wfbs and any NAND dump folders and see if it finishes loading.

try without HDD connected (supposing you'll use SD card to launch homebrew from The Homebrew Channel).
Also, be sure to launch the loader from HBC, not from an installed channel on your Wii menu, just to be sure you are launching the correct version.

without the HDD it shouldn't freeze on that white screen as there's nothing to list, and the menu will appear.
if it still doesn't appear even without HDD, then there's probably an option which prevent the loader to boot without listing games.
Or maybe it's trying to load gamecube games or channels from NAND and one of them is bad? but it should skip it.

About resetting the settings :
the loader is looking at settings in different places, and stops at the first "GXGlobal.cfg" it finds, in this order:
x:/config/
x:/apps/usbloader_gx/ <-- this is the default folder. Please don't use another name (ex. apps/USBLoader/ can cause issues)
x:/apps/usbloadergx/

with X going from SD, USB partition 1, USB Partition 2, ..., USB Partition 8

So, if you have your USBLoaderGX application on USB, verify you don't have a setting on your SD.
If you have the loader on SD, verify you don't have a setting in SD:/config/ folder
if you do, delete it, so you can be sure it's not using some old settings and it will load the settings from the folder where you have the boot dol (apps/usbloader_gx).

GreyWolf: it worked! Something peculiar happened though, when I connected the hard drive to my computer to rename the folders every time I renamed the "wbfs" folder the whole hard drive would go not responding until I reloaded windows explorer. This happened again when I tried to rename it back. The folder does work though, I can go inside and see all the games, I have no idea why this is happening. (YES! It's the issue!!!) I'm unsure why this happened (it didn't happen to any other folder and I can see the games inside...), I can see the games but just like the wbfs if I try to rename them or copy I get not responding. Is their anything I can do to fix it or do I have to format the drive and completely redownload everything? Here is an attached image (I added an extra s for greywolf's suggestion):

Capture.png

Cyan: Not plugging in the hard drive does not work as it tells me that there's no drive detected and then brings me back to the homebrew menu. However, GreyWolf's plan worked and I got in and set all the settings to default. When I tried to change the loader IOS from 249 to 58 it says it does not exist.

(Also, I use Wii Backup Manager not WBFS Manager)

Not sure at all if it's related, and my memory might be fuzzy, but several years ago, I had a problem accessing games with USB Loader GX until I realized that I had set file permissions to read-only on all games, and the loader didn't like that. I set them back to normal (read and write) and everything worked fine. Check your files' attributes, just in case. Who knows?

Moving away from the Wii for a minute, how old is the hard drive? Have you tried running ScanDisk (or disk scanning utility of your choice) on it?
I'd give that a go if you haven't - but a full scan, run overnight (it can take many hours depending on the size of your drive). Given you're getting errors on the PC side, I'm still inclined to think drive issue rather than Wii issue.

(Take with a grain of salt - remote diagnosis is tricky!)

You know, the same damn thing happened when I tried playing gba games on my sdcard via vba gx. I checked on a file explorer, the same thing happened. I would format the drive, and start all over. Only do this though if you have your games still on your computer. When I did this, it worked:D

what are you expecting by quoting our messages here?
do you have an issue ? which issue ? you didn't even explain anything, and you just tell us it doesn't work, but we don't know what you did, nor why.
also, this is an old thread, for a specific issue, do you have the EXACT same issue? you should probably create a new thread where you explain your own problem, or else we can't help you.

yes, trading with another console is a solution, as long as you are sure the problem is the softmod or the console.
if the issue is the HDD, the games or even your settings, you'll have the same problem.
if you need help you can always ask.
