I just got a switch and don't know if I update and play eshop games or wait a CFW and stay on lower FW for better chance to hack. So I decided to make this poll to know what do you think.

Edit: I'm on FW 4.1 and my switch isn't patched.

But if you bought a switch today, what would you do?

All firmwares are currently exploitable due to a flaw in the read-only bootrom embedded in most Nintendo Switch consoles. To check if your console is currently exploitable to this flaw, follow this guide. The only reason one would not update is because they do not wish to use a jig and USB cable to take advantage of this exploit in the future. These unreleased exploits currently work up to 4.1 and involve loading a webpage most likely. Their release is tied to potentially sometime after the CFW, Atmosphere, is completed. If you want to update, I would highly recommend doing so without burning fuses by following this tutorial. There is an alternative to that tutorial that substitutes simplicity for safety here.

Personally i prefer my consoles clean (absolutely no firmware) it just junks them up. That's why these update debates crack me up because the first thing i do is remove the firmware entirely it's useless anyways

Also kudos on the thread title.

You forgot to mention that there are 4.1.0 units out there with the RCM ipatches that prevents the FG exploit from working. Since he just got a Switch it would be best for him to test if he can load a payload such as Hekate successfully and then proceed from there. If not, he would have to wait on 4.1.0 for the warmboot exploit to be public.

I agree although OP didn't make it clear what firmware the console came with nor the serial number making it difficult to ascertain whether he may have a patched unit or not. Regardless, I have amended my previous post with a tutorial that will definitively prove his unit is patched or not.

I say Update.
You going to wait a long time, and by then, something newer and better will be out,and you just spent a small fortune to do nothing with it

Atm all im interested in is Octopath and maybe Shantae. But if they release Dark Souls before Atmosphere, I might have to give up and update.

Because the process looks very complicated, I have no understanding how to downgrade on demand, or where to even get the firmware I need. I understand that there is forum policy on piracy, but a process with steps like "search for .xbin on google" is just too unintuitive. What the hell is xbin, why do I need to search for it, where do I find the necessary keys, etc.

There is an alternative if you have the SX Pro jig or something else that is really good at booting into RCM

You'd be really shortsighted to update with Atmosphere just around the corner. Wait for Atmosphere!

I decided to not update and wait a little bit more for the CFW since it seems does not works immediately on 5.X firmware.
