I really don't want to update from 4.1.0, but I almost did when a streamer friend was going to play some MK8D and I found that my current FW wasn't supported anymore (it's been a while since I last played online with my Switch).

Luckily, even Atmosphere works on 5.x.x, you just have to use a jig and can't use the software method. I was sick of not being able to play the latest games, so I updated anyway.

So, given that Atmosphere works on all firmware up to 5.1.0, (minus the possibility of softmod solutions for anything about 4.x.x), I'm seriously debating updating to 5.1.0. As of now, there is no way to spoof the firmware, for one thing, and two, 4.x.x software solutions are currently private, meaning, there's a chance they will never be available on the public level, so you're forced to use the jig/rcm solution anyway. Second reason, and it's a big one, the emulator I play the most, Snes9x, is already working perfectly on my hacked Wii U. For my Playstation games, I have RetroArch with the Beetle PSX HW core to to that for me, in fact, it handles almost all of my emulation needs for anything complex like PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, etc. And the third reason, and it's one I keep forgetting, the console is only half mine to start with, my brother and I went halvsies when we bought it, as he physically paid me 150 for it. It doesn't feel right for me to risk modding it and bricking it and having to pay for another unit. Last reason, I forgot I ordered SF2 30th Collection on Amazon a long time ago, and I got the notification that it shipped and I tried to cancel it, but couldn't in time. So I can't play the game I bought unless I update to 5.1.0

So yes, combining the fact I already have all the emulation needs on my PC, Super NT, and hacked Wii U, there's nothing that I'm truly missing out on, and as you can see, I've thought this through very clearly. And no, this is something I won't regret, I've accepted the fact I may have to wait several years before anything for a viable software solution for atmosphere comes out for newer firmware. If not, oh well, I'm not bereft of anything I can't do emulation wise on other devices :P And no, I couldn't care less about "backup" loaders, only emulators.

Edit: Should I update or stay on 4.1.0?

Update, don't prive yourself. The games are to play now not later! In fact this post made me want to update so I can enjoy Fornite and Paladins on my Switch

Can anyone explain to me the difference between sysnand and emunand?

I wanted to update my switch to the latest version but would also want atmosphere when it is out.

So basically the sysnand will have the latest version at all times and have access to online capability and the emunand will also have the latest version, but will be kept offline and play emulators?

even if atmosphere is here tomorrow there will be bugs. Also I don't believe its permanent. As in if you reboot the console you have to use the jig again. I would update and wait until its like the wii, wii u, or 3ds scene and all kinks or whatever have been fixed. At least for now you could support the developers before moving to straight back ups. I am currently updating to the latest firmware and waiting to see how this all plays out before making the plunge.

EmuNAND is a 1:1 copy of your SysNAND except it is mounted from an external storage device, such as an SD card. Its like buying a second Switch without actually paying for it except for the part if one gets banned, both are banned. So the goal is to keep one online hack-free. Ideally, this will be EmuNAND as updating it is much safer as well as one of the points to EmuNAND is retaining a low base SysNAND firmware. Logically, SysNAND will be the NAND to load all hacking-related items such as backups or homebrew but it must remain offline at all costs.

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! Really appreciate it. Now I'm wondering why so many people choose to update their SYSNAND even though they could wait for emunand to be available when atmosphere is out.

Its because if your goal is to use SX OS, not updating SysNAND limits your utility of their CFW. For example, they have not implemented spoofing so if you're not on the latest firmware, you cannot play certain games. There are also other people who don't care about online/being banned, but the biggest reason is impatience (and a lack of confidence in Atmosphere's inevitable release)

Thank you again for the explanation :) this has helped me make my decision to stay at 4.1.0 rather than updating to the latest version. I'll wait as long as needed as I'm not in a rush.
