Hacking Trying to figure out what l need for son's 3DS

I have bought a second hand 3DS for my youngest.The firmware is on 2.1.0 -4E (l don't think this has been updated for years judging by the versions that l am reading about.l have got confused by what l am meant to do regarding running an R4 card on it.
My son wants to play 3ds ROMs as well as DS ROMs.
I have read l need a game on 4.xx so that it will update from 2.1.0 -E4
I set up an R4 card on my other kids DS consoles a few years ago so should be able to do it.There seems to be a lot of different cards available now and l am unsure which to buy and if l need a 3ds game to change firmware version
Any help on which card to buy would be a big help

Do you have any R4 card right now? If so, which?
Also, because it is on 2.1 have a look at this. You can put CFW on it via browser

then your best option is to try the 2xrsa method and install Luma. Then you can simply install 3DS games right on your device. For DS games, you can try TWLoader, but I highly suggest to buy some cheap flashcard.

I just checked the 3ds and it has. 2 GB sd card
Can l buy a standard SD adapter to fit the 3DS and a 32 GB sd card and then install the files from that link,put some 3ds ROMs on card and he can then play 3ds ROMs?
When you say buy a cheap flashcard,do you mean another standard R4 card and would this be used solely for DS games.Thanks for the help with this

Also if l mess the install up (just being pessimistic ) are 3ds similar to Wii and can end up bricked?

Yes (micro sd to sd adapter). You can also "hack" it with the current one and then just move the files to the new SD. You then put the roms somewhere on the SD and install them via FBI (you will learn that in the guide; also take a look at Freeshop ).
And yes, any R4 card and it would be used only for DS games (occasionally for hacking someone else's 3DS

).

Bricking is practically impossible due to safety checks being built in to the installers (especially Safeb9sinstaller) and it's usually easy to recover from a brick.

All worked perfectly.Could only fit 1 .cia on the 2gb card,but one VERY happy 10 year old
I have ordered a 32g sd card,so lm assuming l can transfer everything from the 2g card to the 32g card and start filling with .cia?

Yes you can!

Yes, you can transfer everything by just copying the files from one SD to the other.
Remember also that you can delete the cia files after installing them, so you don't waste space keeping the "installer files" in the SD card.

That will be why l only managed to get only 1 via file on the 2gb card.l just installed.l saw the option of install and delete.l will remember for next time.Great tip!

Hey guys,
managed to put a load of cia files on and installed relevant updates.Can he play Mario kart online as it asks to be updated if he tries online play and we are unsure what to do
I also noticed a couple of the games say update available but l have put updates on,so does it show the update message even if updates are already installed?

Install them when you get the message and you can play online
