There are definitely perks to having a highlighted title below your uesrname. Most members will treat you with more respect and pay more attention to your posts. And you'll get a few more likes than everyone else. And if someone pisses you off you can (within reason) deal with them however you like.

But the main drawback is the amount of time you put into your position. I'm going to take a guess and say it's two hours per day. I remember Minox explaining once that he has a day job and his position as a supervisor here doesn't bring him any additional income. And it must be frustrating when the idiots you inevitably encounter online waste your time.

I'll probably never be invited to join the GBAtemp staff but even if I was, I'd probably decline.

A way to get recognition in life.

Woah, back up now. Any staff that writes three reviews can attend E3? I'm guessing they still need to cover their flight as well as the hotel but still. That's sick.
Yeah. Oddly specific, but there needs to be a minimum of three reviews written prior to June. (Between Feb-May) Proof that you're staffed on the site you write for (e.g. anyone on this list) and confirmation from the site's owner or editor that you're capable and have been with the site for 8 months or more. It's actually incredibly easy. There's no limit to how many can attend, but I think they start cracking down and being strict after the 4th badge.

Indeed! It's so lovely with a yellow / green / purple / red bar under your username :) *hint* patrons can have one too, just like VinsCool a few posts above mine *hint* haha

Some does indeed kiss your ass. Some counter that with "authority issues" :P
And you'll get a few more likes than everyone else.
Yup, I definitely got more likes after becoming staff. Mostly because I got noticed a little bit more (and started posting a little more actively I guess). But then again, look at the likes VinsCool above have, and compare with mine :glare:
And if someone pisses you off you can (within reason) deal with them however you like.
I feel the opposite. Now that I'm staff, I have to think about what I write when someone pisses me off. I've snapped a couple of times and boy did I get to pay for that! Something that regular users wouldn't have to deal with to the same extent. When you're in a "powerful" position, you have to lead by example. Hell, even if I would want to block / ignore certain members, I can't preform my duties properly if I do.

BUT, to your question, why did I choose to become staff? Well, as Minox said above: Giving back to the community that has given me so much through the years.

Mag staff because you enjoy writing or reporting, and this is a great outlet to be seen and get experience.
+some perks

Mod staff because you're invested in the community and want to make it a better/cleaner place.

I think it's probably about that simple, though i'm sure there's a whole list of different reasons people join on.

Reading all these posts, the begs the question- who DOES get paid here? Obviously it costs money to keep this website up, so is there a specific person/people getting the money?
And to the mods- how would your decision to become a mod have been swayed if you were offered pay? Would your thinking/reasoning change at all?

People keep saying about badges and titles... unless it was something kind of witty I don't think I have ever paid attention to such things beyond scrolling through looking for a specific post of mine (which I could have done just as well looking at avatars). Even the idea that anybody would care is itself kind of strange to me. I don't think anybody has ever treated me better because of it, however I probably would not have noticed unless looking for it.

Regarding thinking "I represent this place" I don't think I have ever really considered it. I know I have posted things that are going to really piss people off (as I was saying elsewhere earlier pattern recognition is a skill that is known to exist within game playing types) but I mainly consider that funny.

As for being offered pay. Meh. Money bores me and seldom motivates me to do anything, and what might get given to me would do better going for something on the site than funding another old science/engineering book for me to read.

Who gets paid? The server host. The forum software, I think it's a subscription based license. The domain host. It costs a lot to run a site of this size and traffic.
Then, we have several competitions each year. Tempmas being one that soon will happen. And the Bounty has come back with 200 dollars of prize money, and a 500 dollar mini laptop thingy (sponsored!). The bounty happening 4 times a year.
And for those donating above a certain amount in the patreon, the ads are removed... which in turn means a "lack of income" from those ads.
Recently, Costello had to pay for some contest prizes from his own pocket (the Switch, comes to mind).
Oh, and paying the lodging for the reporter we sent off to E3.

So IF (and that's one big if) there's any money left to be made after all expenses, and all competitions, I think it's fair that the owner of the site gets a little spare change.

Now, if I was offered pay, would I have thought something else? Yes. I would have declined, or thought a lot more before accepting to join.
Getting paid puts a whole new level of pressure on you, to preform and to be very professional. But the biggest thing is how taxes and all the legal stuff that being paid brings to the table. Getting a paycheck from another country... hell, the banks here treat you as a criminal if you want to transfer $50 cash that you got from your granny for Christmas, to your bank account. They wanna do a background check, to see if the money comes from a criminal activity or if it's a case of money laundry.

So I would reconsider greatly if I was offered pay.

Probably the only ones paid are those that do the Web development. That's the only thing that requires real skill, if it wasn't paid those staff could take their skills elsewhere and be paid. Whereas there's a plentiful supply of people who are happy to do moderation or content-writing for free, so no need to pay them.

Most likely because they don't want any inactive members banking on getting a press pass. Regardless that's really cool.

As for the getting paid portion. Many, many moons ago Magazine Staff were paid. IIRC. I've been paid for one or two reviews as well back when I was Magazine staff. It honestly just depends on how you market yourself. If you're just wanting to do reviews for items you'd like to have then the review sample is your "payment" but if you have people going out of their way to ask you to review items then you can get away with asking for monetary compensation. :tpi:

(EDIT: Gotta get back to work. Before I go I just wanted to note that I didn't accept any of the below offers. They were examples. Also being paid to do a review is a grey area. As long as you're being truthful to your audience and not sugarcoating the review because you got paid you'll be fine.)

I believe my opinion stands with a lot of what people have already said: Giving back and maintaining a community that you really like and spend time on.

I've been around here a while now, makes you feel old I guess, and can tell you that if it weren't for all the mods and the continous effort from the staff this community wouldn't be as good as it is now.

I remember the days when the PS3 got "jailbroken" and when a big pokemon title would drop - would have been absolute mayhem without the.

There isn't really any advantage to becoming a staff member(*1). Sure some people might treat you better or maybe even attempt to kiss your arse, but that is easily countered by the number of times you have to deal with rude people who don't want to follow the rules or just plain don't like you. However I can obviously only speak for myself, but the reason why I chose to accept the invitation to become a staff member was because I wanted to give something back to the community I had spent a fair amount of time on. And yes, we don't get paid.

(*1) Unless of course you're a staff member writing reviews in which case you get review copies of games, but that sort of evens itself out when you have to write a review for it later.
This was liked by many staff members, so that shows that they secretly live off of drama in the EoF and Patreon Patron's money

For all the bitches, obviously. I get 10, 12 PMs a day asking for some of this Mag staff swag, if you know what I mean :creep:

But really, as a mag staffer, it's just nice giving back to the community that I've been a part of for 8+ years. If it weren't for GBATemp, I probably wouldn't know anything about console hacking and would miss out on a lot of great games/homebrew that have become some of my favorites over the years. Writing up the occasional news or pouring hours into shite games for reviews is the least I can do for the Temp community, and I'm happy to do it.

The owner. I am pretty sure gbatemp is worth around 2 million dollars if I am not mistaken.

If it were 2mil

Looks like one of those 'how much is my site worth' google results lol.

It's based on traffic. The domain is worth at the very minimum hundreds of thousands based on the traffic.
