Why does one choose to become a GBAtemp staff member?

There are definitely perks to having a highlighted title below your uesrname. Most members will treat you with more respect and pay more attention to your posts. And you'll get a few more likes than everyone else. And if someone pisses you off you can (within reason) deal with them however you like.

But the main drawback is the amount of time you put into your position. I'm going to take a guess and say it's two hours per day. I remember Minox explaining once that he has a day job and his position as a supervisor here doesn't bring him any additional income. And it must be frustrating when the idiots you inevitably encounter online waste your time.

I'll probably never be invited to join the GBAtemp staff but even if I was, I'd probably decline.

There isn't really any advantage to becoming a staff member(*1). Sure some people might treat you better or maybe even attempt to kiss your arse, but that is easily countered by the number of times you have to deal with rude people who don't want to follow the rules or just plain don't like you. However I can obviously only speak for myself, but the reason why I chose to accept the invitation to become a staff member was because I wanted to give something back to the community I had spent a fair amount of time on. And yes, we don't get paid.

(*1) Unless of course you're a staff member writing reviews in which case you get review copies of games, but that sort of evens itself out when you have to write a review for it later.

i dont mind,i will do it because i really like it and not because badge or privilege

I feel like I need to put this out here, but most staff members are people who were asked if they wanted to become staff members because we noticed them being nice and helpful members of our community. People asking to become staff members or hinting very strongly at wanting to become staff members rarely if ever get the chance to join.

I've always wondered, how do you become a staff member or mod for GBATemp? I've wanted to help out with the site since I'm on it everyday.

You get asked by admins or higher up staff, you do not ask to become staff.
Don't shitpost, troll or cause trouble for them.
Be helpful, respectful of fellow members.

Theres alot of other things, but this is just basic stuff.

Why am I not allowed to ask? I feel like I'll never be able to help out if I don't ask. I believe in proper communication. It would also make easier for the staff to know that said user is interested.

Well, at the time I was asked, I had quite a fair bit of free time on my hands. Plus, having spent a considerable amount of time here, I thought it'd be a nice way of giving back to the community.

Perks? I guess there may have been a few more likes from people and what not. However, as Uncle Ben once(?) said, with great power comes great responsibility. So I would think that my posts and actions will be scrutinised more than when I was a regular member. So we can't/don't exactly do whatever we like when someone crosses us.

Can't quite say how much time I spend on the site. It just depends on my personal schedule. As you pointed out, I don't get paid for being a staff member, contrary to what some people may think. Hmmmm wait a sec. Am I being cheated of my salary? ;A; :P

It's mainly just dedication to the site that drives the Staff. If there's something or someplace you enjoy spending your time then naturally you'll want to help. The Staff may not be paid in cash but there are definitely other perks that they enjoy.

Review copies of games. (Minus the writing a review part. Which does involve work. The status of being an active Staff member does you quite a few favors in the eyes of companies asking for a review being done.)
Review copies of hardware. (Above statement in parenthesis applies here as well.)
Freebies. (Not sure if it's still the case but I remember being sent an F30 Famicom controller for being Staff, as did a few others. It's a really sweet nifty device.)
E3 tickets yoooo. (I've noticed that it's normally Magazine Staff that are sent but other Staff are sometimes sent to events to do coverage. Press badges come in handy.)
Upgraded Filetrip storage. (Pretty self explanatory.)

Not all of the perks that staff have are shown but they are there. Not because they're needed but sort of as an appreciation to them for what they do. Now excuse me while I go thread crap in the WTS forum.

From my understanding, and from what was stated above. Dedication to the community.
Being helpful, nice, and spending a very big amount of time in here are probably good points for being noticed, and maybe offered a promotion to the staff.

No only do you have to be respectful, you have to be a member no earlier than 2010!

Twas a joke, but really it's a pretty cool pattern you see with the staff.

That's not necessarly true. Older the better, I agree, but some users were promoted despite their shorter time spent here. If I'm not wrong, we have a member from 2014 in the mag staff.

I'm not a mod, so I don't know as much as the higher staff do (or deal with the crazier stuff either), but I have to say , it's been awesome being magazine staff here. I really enjoy doing the news and getting review codes to distribute. Not to mention, I feel like I've definitely made a name for myself here, that wouldn't have happened if I was a normal member, haha! I don't think I asked to be staff, but I was pretty proactive in contributing in the hopes of becoming staff.

Any staff that writes 3 reviews prior to E3 is actually allowed to go, should they choose, which is cool. I'd like to see more staff attend, if possible, one day!

Woah, back up now. Any staff that writes three reviews can attend E3? I'm guessing they still need to cover their flight as well as the hotel but still. That's sick.

Ideally, the only payoff for being staff is the peace of mind that you're making this a nice place to be.

As p1ngpong used to say, if you want to be a mod, chances are you'll never be one.

Which, to expand on that statement, it means that we can sniff out people that would use their power for social status, or dick waving, or power tripping a mile away. The people that would do that are usually the ones that ask to be staff.

And you can ask if that's counter intuitive, because if you pick people that don't want to be staff, how do you ever get new staff? Well, you think about things a bit differently, and you have a lot more to consider when you're actually asked when the time comes. You can say it all day every day that you never want to be a mod. I did. Many times. And I believed it at the time. But I was asked by a good friend on the team if I wanted to join, he presented a good argument to why I should, and I considered it heavily. And I decided to join.

So, to answer your question, why did I choose to be a mod? I knew I could make the Temp a better place through direct action. I love this place.
