You mean like a credit card? Lol, I didn't mean purchase it from Amazon, although I sure made it seem that way didn't I? No, I just posted that so you can see the model I was talking about and the approximate price of it. That's one I recommend.

I'm 99% sure that a 64gb card will work with the Gateway. You may have to do some workarounds, and not even be able to use all 64gb, but it should work. No reason to get a 32gb then a 64gb later down the road when you can get the 64gb now.

Every person I've asked on here and other forums gives me the same answer, buy your card from a reputable retailer, preferably not online to avoid fakes. There are TONS of fake cards out there, most of them on ebay and other shady retailers. Even some people on Amazon claim to get fake cards from Amazon, not a 3rd party seller.

I'm usure if GW supports 64gb since there have been people post that it doesn't work and some claim they are using a 64gb card right now.

default format for SDXC (up to 64gb) is exFAT and has different architecture, people that says is compatible i don't think is the real deal.
By the way Buying a SD Card with UHS-I techonology imho is waste of money, the 3DS wont read GateWay 3DS at 60~100mb/s

Another thing. You guys should ask to gateway the max speed that the gateway flashcart reads the SD card...
By the way read speed only makes difference it supports UHS techonology, because will read up to 40mb/s.. but THIS if the flashcart/3DS actually supports.
If not, wont make any difference buying a class 4... a good Class 4 SD can read as fast as a class 10....

Understand, the CLASS of a SD Card is to determinate its speed for its Writing, not Reading.

The only notable difference is with Fake SD cards that usualy are slowers, a hardware with UHS support(need a SD with UHS techonology tho)
OR if the device you're using is to write data.
I dont think the gateway flashcart writes anything to the SD Card. No problem buying a class 4 that is much cheaper, and usualy people think is fake by its price lol

But if it could supports UHS would be for sure better buying it...

edit:
If you'll use for High-end photographic hardware, or wanna use in a near future for your smartphone it's ok tho,
but remember that only few cellphones supports SDXC and UHS techonology, old photographic hardware also.
I don't know why people don't look around about what they're buying. The worst is when they say:
"My smartphone isn't reading fast!" lo l clichê

True, the "class" of the card isn't really that relevant with flash cards, the ultra high speed etc are for super fast transfers, which would be handy for say photographers with dslr cameras where taking lots of pictures quickly would need the transfer rate to be spot on or they will be stuck waiting for images to transfer to SD before taking the next shot, but when it comes to loading roms etc you will be talking about seconds difference if anything at all.

It might be handy if your copying like 20gb of games over but it's still not going to mean much difference when playing, even playing games from class 2 seems pretty much the same as retail.

Careful on ebay cheap = counterfeit

I ordered a sandisk 64GB ultra for 24 bucks. The counterfeit was horrible the stick on the adapter wasnt close to straight and the card itself was painted and the paint was chipping off. Not only was it chipping but the letters weren't even straight. Have to say the packaging looked good though

I posted this on the maxconsole about a month ago. Since it is relevant to this thread, I've decided to repost it here :

Since there seems to be quite a bit of confusion on what speed and class of microSDs are most suitable for Gateway Carts, I have decided to do a quick and dirty test to see how much a microSD's speed actually affects loading times on the Red Gateway Cart.

This was done by simply taking the slowest microSD I had on hand and comparing its load time to the fastest microSD I had available.

Listed below are the benchmarks results I got for the two microSD Cards :

Toshiba 8 GB Class 4 - Read : 21.70 MB/s - Write 5.184 MB/s

ADATA Premier 16 GB Class 10 UHS 1 - Read 34.89 MB/s - Write : 10.92 MB/s

The Benchmarks were done on a PC running Windows 7 64 bit using a Kingston FCR-HS3 USB 3.0 Card Reader. Sequential 100 MB Average of 5 Test Runs were done using CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64.

Both microSD Cards were then loaded with Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon (USA) then placed in the same Gateway Red Cart in the same 3DS XL sporting Firmware 4.5.0-10U and Gateway 1.2. A simple digital stop watch was used to record the time needed to load the game on both microSD Cards from the Home Menu up to the Title Screen.

The results were as below.

Toshiba 8 GB Class 4 - 16.97 seconds

ADATA Premier 16 GB Class 10 UHS 1 - 16.77 seconds

The difference in load speed was 0.2 seconds which is negligible and can be easily attributed to human error from operating the Stop Watch. This is particularly true since the Title Screen on Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon fades in rather than appears outright and requires a tiny bit of judgment to determine when the game has actually loaded up.

This is despite the fact that the ADATA Premier microSD read speeds is more than 60% faster than that of the Toshiba microSD according to the benchmarks. MicroSD write speeds of course should have no bearing on the loading times of games.

Thus it appears that loading time of games on the Gateway Red Cart is not affected by the Read Speed of the microSD it is using as long as it can read at atleast about 20 MB/s. Almost any microSD you can buy new from stores at the moment should be capable of this speed.

Take note, however, that there are probably quite a few older microSDs out there that have Read Speeds of less than 20 MB/s. For example I myself have a really old Sandisk 2 GB Class 2 SD card which benchmarks have revealed to have a Read Speed of 11.33 MB/s. MicroSD cards with those kinds of Read Speeds may still potentially slow down loading times for games stored on such microSDs.

xD the cards most cloned are SanDisk and Kingston. always when you're buying from those companies you need to be extra careful...
I have a fake Kingston class 2 (bought proposital to test) it works fine, besides its faulty performance (more or less 9% slower than the original)

Commoner,
You're making tests with computer lol... By the way you're not using UHS techonology since is only writing 10mb/s and reading slowly.
An example of real benchmark

crystaldiskmark_sequential_read.png
crystaldiskmark_random_read.png

is kinda hard to find benchmarks for recent Micro SD Cards (the first isnt for microSD, and those 2 pics are from different tests...Random read and sequential) but also works anyways. the second is quite old lol but is to show how to "read" doesnt makes difference, as long as your hardware supports UHS that gateway does not.

If you notice SanDisk Mobile Ultra Class 4 (older version) reads faster than any class 10.
Then, as i said, deppends the sd card you bought. not just the class, and the first pic shows more recent cards, that if you notice there will be no diff at all with the classes for SDHC

Yup, I neglected to update my USB3 drivers before I did the benchmarks. I have updated the drivers since then and both the Read Speeds and Write speeds of the Class 10 cards (both UHS-I and non UHS-I) I have tested were significantly faster.

This oversight doesn't really matter for the purposes of the test though since the Toshiba 8 GB Class 4 benchmarks still returned around 20 MBps read result with the new drivers. Since the results of the speed test was that loading speeds of games on the Gateway Red Cart does not improve beyond this speed, it doesn't really matter if the ADATA 16 GB Class 10 UHS-I was listed with speeds which are lower than they should have been.

If I remember correctly though the ADATA came out at about 45 MBps Read Speed when using the updated drivers.

Write speeds are irrelevant when it comes to loading up the games since nothing is written to the MicroSD itself when loading.

The best resources I have found for getting a grasp of the performance differences between higher end SD and MicroSD cards is this article in which they benchmark 49 different products.

I don't visit her often and I'm kind of busy right now, but I'll leave a few tips.
I'd recommend checking Slickdeals regularly for a MicroSD deal, or checking DealExtreme for a cheap source. I haven't had issues with DX.

The points about MBps read speed and interesting points, here. I'll have to refer to this thread once I get a flash cart.

Or if in the US check Amazon. Their SD card prices are rapidly dropping. For me, I would not recommend DX as their electronics tend to do poorly.

A 64GB card will currently work with Gateway. I'm talking about when (if) multirom comes out. I'll test it myself if it ever arrives.

I think the history of this thread speaks for itself. There is no "best" micro SD for Gateway. There is just brands you should stay away from.

Well, looking at the only other page in this thread, I would say yes based on mznova's post. :)

Thats OK then. As it is a UK based specialist in memory cards I am presuming that it will be legit. I was going to go with the cheaper 32GB Transcend card cause I thought that would of done just fine but then I had second thoughts about it and seen as though there are some major big games coming up on the 3DS I thought they would probably have big files attached with them so I had a change of mind and decided on the 64.

Good call. Cheap memory is sketchy at best. I'd rather pay a little more for the peace of mind. Especially in the flashcart scene. I'm rockin' a 16GB SanDisk Ultra and have nothing but praise for it thus far. Been using it for ~6 months.
