the trick is that the two trinangle pieces don't have the same slope. on the top one, the long edge of the overall triangle sorta bends in while on the bottom one it bends out. that bend creates enough surface area to make up for one square.

and yes, that puzzle bugged the hell out of me for a very long time. one of my friends actually made giant cutout pieces to figure it out.

The answer to the sheeps question is 9 whether it is grammatically correct or not.

The trick is the question asks you to count sheep/sheeps not how many are alive or dead.

A dead sheep is still a sheep.
A dead sheeps is still a sheeps.
Even though the person made a mistake in asking the question
